While Punisher: One Last Kill doesn’t offer much new to the Punisher’s story, it does answer a long-standing question: is Frank Castle simply a killer? The special presentation is fun to watch and mirrors the style of the original Marvel Netflix series, showing Jon Bernthal’s character trying to live a normal life before inevitably becoming the Punisher again.
This isn’t meant as a complaint. It’s common for superhero stories – including movies – to feature the hero finally taking action in the last part. However, Punisher: One Last Kill does this in a unique way, and it makes you really think about Frank Castle: is he just a killer, or is he something more – a hero?
Punisher: One Last Kill Starts With Frank Castle As a Serial Killer

For years, people have been arguing about the Punisher’s symbolism, especially after the St. Louis police union used his skull logo in 2019 to protest investigations into their conduct. This sparked outrage from Marvel comic writers, with some, like Marc Sumerak, stating that any officer wearing the symbol either misunderstands the character or is unfit to serve. Kurt Busiek even labeled the Punisher a serial killer. This understandably led to strong disagreement from the Punisher’s fans, and the debate continues to this day.
Netflix’s portrayal of the Punisher often depicted him as a serial killer, even if audiences felt sympathy for him. The FBI defines a serial killer as someone who commits at least three murders with a significant gap between each one. These killers usually target specific victims and are motivated by things like sexual deviancy, a need for control, or a desire to instill fear. The Punisher fits this profile in some ways – his iconic skull logo is meant to be frightening, and he typically kills far more than three people a month when he’s actively fighting crime.
What’s particularly compelling is the idea of an ’emotional cooling off’ period for the character. Marvel’s Punisher series on Netflix used this effectively, allowing for a repeating story arc where Frank Castle attempts a normal life, only to be driven back to violence when pushed too far. Punisher: One Last Kill starts with this same pattern, showing Frank in what seems to be his longest period of calm yet. However, the story immediately presents him as a dangerous serial killer.
The Punisher Becomes More Than a Serial Killer

By the end of Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle has changed significantly. Ma Gnucci’s actions – putting a price on Frank’s head and revealing his location – have thrown Little Sicily into turmoil. While readers might anticipate a violent confrontation with Ma Gnucci, Frank surprisingly lets her escape. He focuses instead on protecting innocent people, though he still uses deadly force when necessary. His driving force is no longer revenge, but a desire to help others.
In Punisher: One Last Kill, the story makes it clear that Frank Castle is changing. After being thanked by a family he saved – including a young girl who reminds him of his deceased daughter – he later resumes killing, but this time targeting those who have harmed others. This marks a shift for the Punisher: he’s no longer driven by personal revenge or a desire for power, but by a self-imposed mission to deliver justice and protect the innocent.
The Punisher’s actions don’t quite qualify him as a hero. His methods are still incredibly harsh – he’s quick to kill anyone without bothering to understand their crimes. It’s not about proportional justice or ‘an eye for an eye,’ but a limitless form of vengeance that existed even before ancient legal codes. Calling him Marvel’s ultimate antihero is more accurate than simply calling him a hero. He’s definitely evolved from the more ruthless, serial killer-like character seen in the Netflix series, though it remains to be seen if that change will last when he appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
