3 Years After Disastrous Finale, Marvel Star Apologizes for the MCU’s Biggest Blunder

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe started in 2008, it’s become the most successful movie franchise of all time, consistently delivering hit after hit. For a while, other studios would often reschedule their releases to avoid competing with new Marvel films. The studio even managed to turn relatively unknown characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy into major stars. Interestingly, the MCU nearly stumbled right at the beginning with lukewarm responses to The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2. But no one could have foreseen the biggest misstep of the entire franchise would come in 2023.

The initial announcement of Secret Invasion promised a compelling political thriller within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, finally giving Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury a central role and showcasing the villainous side of the Skrulls. However, the series turned out to be one of the most critically panned Marvel projects to date. Recently, star Emilia Clarke jokingly apologized for the show’s reception in a new interview.

Marvel Star Emilia Clarke Apologizes for Secret Invasion

Emilia Clarke recently spoke with Variety about her experiences joining major franchises after becoming well-known from Game of Thrones. She jokingly admitted that Secret Invasion wasn’t a hit with viewers, saying, “I don’t think anyone liked that show!” She also expressed that her role in Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn’t well-received, and bluntly stated that the 2015 film Terminator Genisys “should never have happened.”

Clarke explained, ‘These were all projects I actively chose to be part of, so if they don’t succeed, I don’t take it personally. My involvement ends as soon as filming is finished. Ultimately, how audiences react isn’t something I can control.’

Okay, let me tell you, Secret Invasion really didn’t land for me, and honestly, it feels like a significant misstep for the MCU. It’s not about the acting – Samuel L. Jackson and the cast do what they can – but the show stumbled right from the start. Killing off Maria Hill in the very first episode felt completely unnecessary and like a cheap shock tactic. And then there was the whole thing with the opening credits being created using AI – that just rubbed a lot of fans (and me) the wrong way. It just felt…off, and set a weird tone for the entire series.

The Disney+ series Secret Invasion continued to stumble throughout its six episodes. A major plot point involved Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes being replaced by a Skrull at some unknown time, which retroactively changed previous appearances of the character. The finale suffered from a significant issue: a device overloaded Sonya Falsworth with the powers of several incredibly strong heroes – Drax, Thanos, Hulk, Cull Obsidian, Korg, Abomination, Thor, Captain America, and Captain Marvel – making her arguably the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the idea itself wasn’t necessarily bad, the visual effects used to depict this were poorly executed. The resulting CGI was widely criticized and, unfortunately, this was the last time audiences ever saw or heard from the character within the ongoing MCU storyline.

Clarke is now able to joke about Secret Invasion, despite the show receiving very negative reviews when it came out – it’s still considered one of the least popular Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Fortunately, she seems to have a good sense of which roles to take on. It doesn’t look like the storyline involving her character, G’iah, will be revisited in future MCU stories.
