Doctor Who’s 2026 Christmas Special Just Got Its Most Disappointing Update Yet

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I just heard some disappointing news about the 2026 Christmas special. Apparently, there’s a delay – a real snag that even the Doctor’s time-traveling abilities can’t seem to resolve! It’s a bit of a setback, honestly.

Back in October 2025, a new Doctor Who Christmas special was planned for release later that year. Since then, we haven’t heard much about how it’s coming along, and fans have been left with a lot of questions. Now, comments from the show’s creator, Russell T. Davies, suggest the special might not be ready until 2027 – pushing back the release date.

So, I was listening to an interview with Russell T Davies on LBC, and he started talking about his plans for the rest of the year. He basically said he’s not actually filming anything right now, even though a new Doctor Who Christmas special is already scheduled to come out. It’s a little weird, honestly – you’d think he’d be on set, but apparently not!

I’m enjoying a relaxed pace right now and not feeling pressured to jump into new projects. I’m starting to work on something new today. We’ll finish up ‘The Tip Toe’ next week, and then I’ll begin the next script. That script will probably take a few months to complete, and after that, we’ll start looking for actors and crew. Because of that timeline, I won’t be back on set filming anything until sometime next year.

Because Doctor Who relies heavily on visual effects, filming for the Christmas special would typically need to be underway by now, or even already completed, to be ready for a December release. While Russell Davies didn’t directly confirm a delay, his statement that there are no filming plans for the remainder of 2026 implies that fans shouldn’t expect the next installment of Doctor Who until 2027.

Doctor Who hasn’t aired new episodes since the season 15 finale on May 31, 2025. The season, titled “The Reality War,” ended with a surprising twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor unexpectedly transformed into a new form played by Billie Piper, who fans will remember as the companion Rose Tyler. It’s still unclear whether Piper will be playing the Sixteenth Doctor, revisiting her role as Rose, or portraying The Moment – a character from the show’s 50th anniversary – or someone else entirely.

Russell T Davies was the driving force behind the successful return of Doctor Who in 2005 and led the show for its first five years. He returned to lead the series again in 2023 for the special episodes celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary, which featured David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. In the final episode of those specials, a unique event called ‘bigeneration’ occurred, allowing both the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors to co-exist.

Now that Ncuti Gatwa has finished his time as the Doctor after two seasons, the agreement between Disney+ and the BBC has concluded, meaning Disney+ was previously the only place to stream new episodes of Doctor Who outside the UK. It’s currently unknown where the show will air in the future, including the upcoming Christmas special. Similarly, it’s unclear whether Billie Piper will only appear in the Christmas special or continue with the series until a new main actor is cast.

The future of Doctor Who is still unclear, and we might not know what’s next until 2027. However, plenty of recent episodes are currently available to stream. You can watch the 60th anniversary specials and Ncuti Gatwa’s first two seasons on Disney+, and episodes featuring the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Doctors are now streaming on AMC+.
