The movie The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently playing in theaters, and people are intensely discussing how well it’s doing at the box office – and what that means for the future of the Star Wars series. It’s difficult to say for sure what’s next. While Lucasfilm announced three new films at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, they seem to have reconsidered those plans. We only know for certain about Star Wars: Starfighter coming out next year. Beyond that, even the future of live-action Star Wars TV shows is uncertain after Season 2 of Ahsoka.
Disney had intended to release the second season of Ahsoka this year, but those plans have been delayed until 2027. This news is frustrating for fans who were excited about a potential revival of The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, there’s still one Star Wars project coming out this year – a smaller-scale story that looks promising.
The Next Star Wars TV Show is an Exciting Spinoff

This year, fans can look forward to Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, a new animated series building on the popular Visions show. Visions is known for its unique anthology format, giving different animation studios the freedom to reimagine the Star Wars universe with original, non-traditional stories. It’s easy to jump into, visually beautiful, and truly captures the spirit of George Lucas’s creation. The Ninth Jedi is the first spin-off miniseries from Visions, and it’s set to be exciting – especially because it offers a fresh take on the Jedi.
In The Ninth Jedi, the Jedi Order has been destroyed, but not by the familiar events of Order 66. This story takes place in a timeline where the Sith are incredibly powerful and the Jedi are nearly extinct – a time even more bleak than the Dark Times we know from the main Star Wars story. A small group of Jedi have come together to fight for the light side, led by Lah Kara, the daughter of a renowned lightsaber smith who has been kidnapped. Created by IG Animation, The Ninth Jedi builds upon stories from seasons 1 and 3 of the Visions animated series.
The new Star Wars novel, The Ninth Jedi, presents an exciting possibility for the franchise. The protagonist, Lah Kara, is set up as a potentially powerful figure, and her close relationship with her father draws parallels to Anakin Skywalker’s bond with his mother. This allows the story to explore familiar themes from the Skywalker saga, either by showing a similar fall to the dark side or by demonstrating how this new ‘Chosen One’ might succeed where Anakin failed. With the Jedi Order regaining strength, the novel also offers a fresh perspective on what the Jedi can be, providing a welcome change from what fans are accustomed to. The Ninth Jedi might be the final Star Wars release of the year, but it has the potential to be the most compelling.
