The new Masters of the Universe movie is expected to open strongly, which is great news for Amazon MGM Studios, especially after the success of Project Hail Mary earlier this year. This film is a reboot of the classic 1980s franchise, originally based on a popular toy line. While movies like this can be unpredictable, early projections are very promising for this live-action adventure featuring He-Man and his fight against Skeletor. With director Travis Knight – known for Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee – at the helm and positive early reactions, the film is gaining even more momentum before its release.
Fans of Masters of the Universe will get an extra-large screen experience! The movie will be released in IMAX theaters on June 5th, alongside its regular and Dolby Cinema debut, just in time for the opening weekend. Tickets are available now. This means The Mandalorian & Grogu will be leaving IMAX theaters after a two-week run.
Masters of the Universe Getting Huge Push for Opening Weekend

Fans can see Masters of the Universe in IMAX starting with a special preview showing on Wednesday, June 3rd, at select theaters before its official release on Thursday night and wider release on Friday. AMC locations will even offer these Wednesday screenings in Dolby Cinema where available. The film is predicted to be a blockbuster, quickly replacing Backrooms in Dolby and The Mandalorian & Grogu in IMAX. This means lots of screenings each day for action movie fans!
Initial expectations for the new Masters of the Universe movie were low, and much of the online discussion focused on Jared Leto’s role as Skeletor. Leto hasn’t had a big box office hit recently, and some fans blamed his last starring role in Tron: Ares for that film’s disappointing performance. However, because he’s heavily disguised as Skeletor and isn’t prominently featured in the marketing, the movie is being promoted based on its large-scale action and fantastical story. As a result, early box office predictions have been steadily increasing – starting at $25 million for the opening weekend and climbing to $35 million. Now, after early screenings, those predictions are going even higher thanks to positive reactions from fans and critics.
Despite facing strong competition from films like The Mandalorian & Grogu and the surprise hit Backrooms, as well as the premiere of Scary Movie, the new Masters of the Universe movie has a tough road to profitability with a budget exceeding $170 million. Adding IMAX screenings could signal confidence in the film, or it might be a last-ditch effort to boost opening weekend numbers. It’s still uncertain whether this strategy will be successful.
