Star Wars’ Official Jedi Yoda Replacement Has 3 Massive Problems To Overcome

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about Yoda’s legacy, and while the series is trying to find a character to fill his shoes, it’s proving really difficult. After he first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda was shrouded in mystery – and George Lucas deliberately kept it that way! The old Expanded Universe never fully explained his species, and even Yaddle, the other member we saw in the prequels, didn’t give us much more insight. Honestly, we still know very little about where Yoda and Yaddle even come from.

I’ve loved watching Grogu grow! Ever since he first appeared, everyone called him ‘Baby Yoda,’ but this new movie really shows how much he’s developing. He’s getting smarter and starting to become more independent, and honestly, his Force abilities are incredible – even stronger than what we saw in The Mandalorian! It’s amazing to see him reach his potential.

On top of everything else, the show continues to highlight the similarities between Grogu and Yoda, showing Grogu using a walking stick just like his predecessor. This growing connection to Yoda is significant, but it also creates new obstacles.

How Far Can Star Wars Take Grogu?

The big question surrounding Grogu’s future in Star Wars is whether we’re ready to see him grow up. It’s a tough one for Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to consider. A lot of Grogu’s charm comes from how undeniably cute he is. Every scene with him in The Mandalorian is a joy to watch, and the animatronics and puppetry used to bring him to life are amazing. What’s truly remarkable is that his appeal has lasted for seven years – he’s somehow even more adorable now than when we first met him!

Giving Grogu a more mature appearance, or even just letting him talk, would drastically change the character – both his relationship with Din Djarin and how viewers see him. It would be incredibly challenging to cast the voice actor, knowing how much pressure there would be to get it perfect. Achieving the right visual look would be just as difficult.

I really appreciated seeing more of Grogu’s personality shine through – he’s not just adorable, he’s genuinely brave and resourceful, and his bond with Din Djarin is so clear. But it did make me wonder about the future. Will that same charm work if Grogu gets noticeably older and bigger? I’m not sure audiences will connect with a “Teen Yoda” the same way, or if fans even want to see him simply become another version of Yoda we’ve seen before. It’s a risk, and I’m curious to see how they handle it.

Taking that approach would be a huge gamble, but avoiding it also restricts what they can do with the character. To maintain the illusion of him being a child, they can’t jump too far ahead in time. Even considering how little we know about his species and why his growth stopped, they’d eventually need to make bigger changes to his appearance or abilities. Luckily, the timeline in The Mandalorian is already somewhat flexible, so they likely have time to tell more stories about Grogu and his father before these issues become major problems.

Could Grogu Become A Jedi Like Yoda?

It’s natural to wonder just how strong Grogu’s abilities with the Force will become. He’s clearly very gifted, and his unusually high midi-chlorian count – which might be typical for his species – suggests great potential. Will he grow to be as powerful as Yoda, and how will he use his powers?

He’s already sided with the Mandalorians instead of the Jedi, but he still uses the Force. It’s possible that as he gets older, he might consider the Jedi way again, maybe even becoming a unique combination of both – a Mandalorian Jedi. However, that’s unlikely to happen while he’s still a child, even if he is an unusually mature 50-year-old in that child’s body.

Will Star Wars Ever Reveal More About Grogu & Yoda’s Species?

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the show’s world-building. What I loved about The Mandalorian was diving into the history and traditions of the Mandalorians, and the prequels, along with stories set in the High Republic, really expanded my understanding of the Jedi. It’s not about a specific alien race, but Star Wars always feels richest when it’s revealing more about its universe – knowledge truly feels like power in that galaxy. But Yoda and Grogu’s species are different. They’re compelling because we know so little about them – it’s a mystery that makes them so special. They’re a rare exception to the rule that more information is always better.

As a huge fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about where they’ll take Grogu’s story. If he’s going to grow up over many years, it raises some big questions! Yoda was a Jedi Master by 100, and Grogu is only half that age now, but he still feels like a little kid. Is that because of what happened after Order 66? Or do his people just develop really quickly later on? Was Yoda’s 900 years typical for his species, or was he just unusually long-lived because of the Force? Honestly, I’m dying to know more about where they even come from, how many of them there are, and if they’re all strong with the Force. And seriously, what are they called? Are they even related to the Jedi, or is that something else entirely?

In an interview with ComicBook, Dave Filoni was asked if Grogu would eventually grow up. He responded that it’s a natural question, since children do grow up, and it’s something they’ve considered.

It’s a constant challenge to reveal just enough about a character without giving everything away. Characters like Yoda and Grogu are popular partly because they have an air of mystery. Originally, there wasn’t even a plan for a character like Grogu. We’re always considering what the story and the character need in the long run to make sure things make sense as we move forward.

Making Grogu an adult wouldn’t solve all the mysteries surrounding him, but it would offer some clarity and likely create new ones. Considering George Lucas’s reluctance to reveal details about Yoda’s species, it seems unlikely Lucasfilm would allow such an exploration now, particularly with his former student Dave Filoni in charge. This means a part of Grogu’s background will likely remain a secret, even as he matures.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is now playing in theaters.
