What Happened to Alaskan Bush People’s Matt Brown?

Content warning: This article mentions substance abuse and possible suicide.

The Wolfpack has lost one of their own.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear about Matt Brown’s passing. The news came out on May 30th – he was found in the Okanogan River in Washington state. He was only 43. Apparently, a group of people searching the area found him, and sadly, it was confirmed to be Matt. His brother, Bear, shared on TikTok that Noah was actually part of the search party and was the one who helped bring him ashore and identified him. It’s just a heartbreaking loss, and I’m sending all my condolences to the Brown family during this incredibly difficult time. I’m still trying to process everything and learn more about what happened.

Who Was Matt Brown?

I’ve been a huge fan of Alaskan Bush People since it started in 2014, and it’s been amazing watching the Brown family navigate life in the Alaskan wilderness. The show really focuses on Matt Brown, along with his incredible parents, Billy and Ami, and all his siblings – Bear, Noah, Joshua (or ‘Bam Bam’ as we all know him!), Gabe, SnowBird (‘Bird’), and Rain. They’re such a close-knit group, everyone affectionately calls them ‘the wolfpack,’ and it’s been a joy to follow their adventures.

How Did Matt Brown Die?

As a lifestyle expert, I’m heartbroken to share the news of Matt’s passing. While authorities haven’t officially confirmed the cause, everything points towards suicide. He’d been dealing with difficulties for a long time, and though I never imagined he’d go this far, the evidence suggests a self-inflicted injury. It’s a devastating reminder that you never truly know what someone is going through, and it’s so important to check in on your loved ones.

How Was Matt Brown Found?

As a lifestyle expert focused on safety and well-being, I’ve been following the recent search efforts in Okanogan County with a heavy heart. It began on May 27th when a 911 call came in about a man sitting in the Okanogan River. The caller briefly looked away, then turned back to see the man face down in the water, drifting with the current. Sadly, initial responders—law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services—couldn’t find him. A large-scale search involving dogs, boats, sonar technology, and divers was immediately launched. During the search, authorities did recover a firearm from the area where the man was last seen. It’s a truly tragic situation, and my thoughts are with everyone involved.

What Was Matt Brown’s Relationship With His Family Before His Death?

Matt had been estranged from his family for a while, but he was able to mend things with his father, Billy, before Billy passed away in 2021 after a seizure.

In a recent TikTok video, Bear Brown shared an update on the family’s relationship with Matt. He explained that it’s a difficult subject and he doesn’t want to discuss it in detail, but confirmed Matt is doing well and currently prefers to keep his distance from the family.

Despite the estrangement, the Brown family cherishes many positive memories of Matt. They remember him as a bright, curious, and creative person who loved the outdoors, especially fishing and boating. He was skilled at navigating and operating the family’s vessels and always eager to learn and explore. The family also highlighted Matt’s artistic talent, his compassionate nature, and his willingness to help others, adding that those who knew him well understood his kind heart.

What Has Matt Brown’s Family Shared About His Sobriety Journey?

I’ve been a longtime fan of Alaskan Bush People, and it was really tough watching Matt struggle. He was last on the show back in 2018, when he bravely went back to treatment for his mental health and alcohol issues – he’d actually been through treatment before in 2016. The family has shared that they’ve tried everything over the years – rehab, interventions, constant support – to help him get better. What I really admired, though, was that Matt himself was so open about his journey. He even posted videos online, hoping to help others who were going through similar things and let them know they weren’t alone. It was incredibly inspiring to see him try to turn things around.

Recently, as Matt openly discussed his difficulties, his family was working to rebuild their relationship with him, offering help and trying to support his journey toward recovery and well-being. The Browns also recognize that many people can relate to the challenges they’re facing.

Families dealing with these kinds of problems often have to make tough choices, set limits, and sometimes spend time apart, but they still care deeply for the person who is struggling. Our family experienced this firsthand.

Ultimately, they encourage others fighting addiction or mental health battles to seek help.

The family hopes people will remember Matt’s life as a reminder that no one should face difficult times by themselves. If you’re struggling with addiction, depression, or feeling hopeless, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help and talk to someone. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and there is always hope. Matt’s life should be remembered for the positive impact he had on others – the encouragement he gave, the experiences he shared, his pursuit of knowledge, his creativity, and the love he showed to those around him – not just for how it ended.
