Backrooms smashes record in UK and Ireland and knocks Star Wars film from top of box office

A24’s new film, Backrooms, had a record-breaking opening weekend at the UK and Ireland box office, earning the studio its biggest opening weekend ever in those countries.

Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old writer and director, turned his popular YouTube series into a film that earned £4.2 million in its opening weekend. It quickly climbed the box office charts, performing better than Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

I’m absolutely blown away by how well this movie has done! It’s been a massive hit here and overseas, bringing in a total of $118 million worldwide. What’s even more incredible is that it only cost $10 million to make – it’s earned back its budget more than ten times over! It’s a true success story, and I’m so glad it’s resonating with audiences everywhere.

The film has quickly become one of A24’s most successful releases worldwide, ranking fifth behind only Marty Supreme, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Drama, and Civil War.

The current excitement is likely to last for several more weeks, particularly with the strong performance of the new horror film, Obsession. It’s quite possible this will eventually lead it to become the top film on the charts.

In the film Backrooms, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, a shopkeeper who vanishes into a strange, infinite world of office rooms. Renate Reinsve stars as his therapist, who ventures in after him and becomes lost in the mystery as well.

Critics have praised the film, and our review awarded it four stars, describing it as a chilling science fiction horror. We especially highlighted the setting, noting its remarkable transformation from ordinary to truly unsettling.
