A new gameplay trailer for the upcoming Wolverine game was released last night (Tuesday, June 2nd) during the State of Play Showcase, and it shows that this game will be quite different from the Spider-Man games.
Even though Insomniac Games has a strong track record with successful Spider-Man games – including Spider-Man (2018), Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), and Spider-Man 2 (2023) – they are now working on Wolverine.
It’s easy to see some resemblances between these two famous Marvel characters. The seven-minute gameplay video shows action-packed combat that feels a little familiar unless you pay close attention.
When Wolverine defeats an enemy, the game features impactful and visually impressive takedowns – the camera often focuses on the action and slows down to highlight the moment. The Spider-Man games use similar visual effects, which leads us to a key difference we noticed between the two.

It’s clear the new Wolverine game is much more violent than the Spider-Man games. While Spider-Man is rated for ages 16 and up in the UK, Wolverine appears to be geared towards a more mature, 18+ audience.
When Wolverine defeats an enemy, it’s brutal – he completely skewers them with his claws, and the game shows plenty of blood to emphasize how violent it is.
Okay, so as a gamer, I totally get this. Like, for comic and movie buffs, it’s obvious: Spider-Man always tries to do the right thing and not kill anyone, even the bad guys. But Wolverine? He’s way more likely to just… take care of the problem permanently. It’s a big difference in how they approach things.

Another key difference I was curious about before seeing the trailer is how you get around. The Spider-Man games let you swing everywhere with webs, but Wolverine doesn’t have that ability, and it’s clear this game reflects that.
The trailer reveals Wolverine will have a few ways to get around. He can make large jumps, sometimes even landing on enemies, or quickly travel by motorbike.
We’re not sure if motorbikes will be available throughout the game, but Logan uses one in the gameplay footage. Hopefully, riding motorbikes will be a regular part of the experience, because it seems really enjoyable!
One more key difference between Spider-Man and Wolverine in the game, as shown in the trailer, is Wolverine’s healing ability. This gives him a clear advantage that Spider-Man doesn’t have.
Wolverine’s famous healing ability from the comics and movies is included in the game. However, the developers had to balance it, as making him completely invincible would make the game too simple.
To use Wolverine’s healing ability, you need to fill up his rage meter by attacking, blocking, and defeating enemies. Once it’s full, you can use the meter to heal himself.
So, Wolverine is looking like a really cool project from Insomniac Games! It’s coming out on September 15th, and it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive – I already pre-ordered mine. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more news and updates about it, and I’ll let you know what I think when I get my hands on it!
