Written by Alex Garland and featuring Karl Urban from “The Boys,” the film “Dredd” premiered in September 2012 and received an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this score doesn’t fully capture the gritty, violent reboot’s true worth. Over the past decade, appreciation for it has significantly increased. Unfortunately for HBO Max subscribers, “Dredd” will be removed from their service at the end of July, so if you want to watch it again, you should do so soon!
In a simplified and engaging manner: Karl Urban delivers a remarkable performance as the towering future law enforcer in Dredd, with Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey playing characters that complement him well. Good News, A New Dredd Movie Is Finally Coming
Regrettably, contrary to long-standing speculation, the upcoming Judge Dredd film on the big screen won’t be a direct sequel to “Dredd”. Instead, the director of “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Love & Thunder”, Taika Waititi, is helming his own Judge Dredd movie. Despite the critical acclaim and arguably cult status it enjoyed, “Dredd” didn’t generate enough box office revenue to be deemed a viable franchise investment for Hollywood. Given its superiority over Sylvester Stallone’s 1990s adaptation, which was entertainingly terrible, this decision seems all the more peculiar.
Can Taika Waititi effectively embody the authentic essence of Judge Dredd? His talent for crafting sci-fi worlds was evident in Thor: Ragnarok, and he undoubtedly possesses the skill to create unique realms. However, it remains uncertain whether his interpretation will resemble the beloved Karl Urban portrayal that captivated audiences over a decade ago. Though this adaptation may not be available on HBO Max for some time, it might be wise to seize the moment and rekindle your affection for it before its absence.
