Ubisoft is planning significant visual improvements for Rayman Legends Retold. Despite the Nintendo Switch 2 being less powerful than the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PCs, they’re confident the game will run well. In an interview with VideoGamesChronicle, technical director Thibaut Assandri from Ubisoft Montpellier discussed the game’s performance, graphics, and development for the new Nintendo console.
A key advantage of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 over the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will be a special version of Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which improves image quality. According to Assandri, this technology works impressively well, even enabling the console to display games in full 4K resolution when connected to a TV. He reports that DLSS has allowed the Switch 2 version of Rayman Legends Retold to achieve visual quality and performance comparable to the Xbox Series S.
As you can see, DLSS is performing really well,” Assandri explained. “When the Switch 2 is docked, it outputs in full 4K because power usage isn’t a concern, allowing for increased graphical fidelity. Overall, the visual quality on Switch 2 is comparable to that of the Xbox Series S.
Developing Rayman Legends Retold for the Nintendo Switch 2 required many technical choices, particularly when it came to demanding features like ray tracing. The Ubisoft Montpellier team worked hard to optimize their Snow Drop engine so the game could run smoothly at a target of 60 frames per second on Nintendo’s console.
He explained that ray tracing is demanding on hardware. In Star Wars Outlaws on the Switch 2, they addressed this by limiting the frame rate to 30 FPS. However, their goal is to achieve a smooth 60 FPS across all platforms – including the Switch 2, a PS5 Pro, and high-end PCs – which presented a significant challenge. They had to heavily optimize their Snow Drop engine to double its performance from 30 to 60 FPS.
To achieve that level of quality, we actually decreased the resolution. Since most of the graphics processing power needed depends on the resolution, lowering it significantly reduced the strain on the system.
The Snow Drop engine underwent some adjustments to better suit Rayman Legends Retold. Because the engine was originally built for large, open-world games, the team, according to Assandri, could freely modify aspects like how detail is displayed in the game.
He explained that their system adjusts the level of detail based on how large a character appears on screen, rather than its distance from objects in the environment. This means the amount of detail you see will change depending on the character’s size. He also noted that the visual detail on PlayStation 5 is roughly equivalent to what players will experience on the Switch 2.
These choices allowed the studio to maintain a smooth 60 frames per second at a consistent resolution across all gaming systems, no matter how many players were in the game.
The updated version of Rayman Legends, called Rayman Legends Retold, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 starting October 1st.
