PS5 Price Hike Has Flushed UK Hardware Sales Down the Toilet

Sony has faced numerous challenges throughout this console generation, including supply chain issues caused by the pandemic and tariffs. Now, a price increase for the PS5, driven by higher manufacturing costs, could be a problem they struggle to solve.

According to Games Business journalist Chris Dring, PlayStation 5 sales in the UK dropped by 50% in May. This resulted in the console only narrowly beating the Xbox Series X|S – by just 400 units. The Nintendo Switch 2, however, easily surpassed sales of both consoles.

Forza Horizon 6’s release helped Microsoft see a 12% increase in sales. Also, according to Dring, the recent price increase for the PS5 may have actually increased sales in the short term, as people likely bought it before the price went up.

I expect Sony will have a very challenging year as they try to reach the 100 million unit mark, and they don’t seem to be in great shape right now.

As the company has stated, their main goal is to sell more to existing PlayStation owners. That’s why we’re seeing a lot of new products like the FlexStrike arcade stick and the 27-inch PlayStation monitor. They’re also encouraging players to sign up for year-long PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

Look, I’m not exactly shedding tears for a company as huge as Sony, but honestly, I think they’ve had a really rough time with this console generation. It makes you wonder how well the PS5 would be doing if it hadn’t been for the pandemic, those tariffs, and everything going on with the global economy. Ultimately, they’re just gonna have to roll with the punches and do their best to get through it.
