Supergirl Officially Just Teased the DCU’s Deadliest Superman Weapon

DC Studios’ second film in its new universe, Supergirl, is coming out soon and promises to be quite different from the recent Superman movie. While Superman told a hopeful, down-to-earth origin story, Supergirl will take audiences on a galactic adventure, based on the critically acclaimed comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film follows Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) as she reluctantly teams up with a young alien, Ruthye (Eve Ridley), to track down a dangerous killer named Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts). The movie stays true to the comic’s main storyline but also adds exciting new details, including the introduction of Jason Momoa as Lobo and a reimagined look for Krem.

The trailers for Supergirl have shown a lot of the story’s space-based chase, but they’ve left out one key element from the comics – until now. Warner Bros. recently released new posters for premium formats like Dolby Cinema, and fans who know the comics will notice something important in the artwork. The posters show Supergirl flying through space with several suns in the background, and one of them is distinctly green. This color is a direct reference to a dangerous sun containing Kryptonite, which orbits the planet Barenton – a powerful weapon created to harm Superman, as seen in the comics by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

How Is the Kryptonite Sun Used in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

In issue #5 of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, the villain Krem uses a magical item to send Supergirl and Ruthye to the planet Barenton, located on the other side of the universe. Barenton was specifically created to capture Superman, and it orbits a sun made entirely of Kryptonite. This isn’t the usual Kryptonite that slowly weakens Supergirl; the entire planet is bathed in radiation from the Kryptonite sun, instantly removing her powers and causing intense pain as long as the sun is visible. The planet is also filled with huge, ancient predators, meaning a powerless Supergirl has no easy way to survive. Supergirl knows about Barenton because Superman was once sent there, and the Justice League had to rescue him after 45 minutes. He later said it was the closest he’d ever come to dying.

In the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow story, Kara doesn’t have the Justice League to help her. She’s relying on Ruthye, a regular teenage girl armed with a sword, to protect her from dangerous dinosaurs, all while a sun emitting Kryptonite slowly weakens her. Despite these extreme conditions – ten hours under a sun that nearly killed even the strongest Kryptonian in less than an hour – Supergirl perseveres. Once the sun sets and her powers return, she leaves Barenton driven by her own willpower. This challenging experience in Barenton is a key part of the story, so fans will be excited to hear it’s likely to be included in the upcoming film.

Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.
