
Mike Daly, the game director for the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, recently shared more about how the game will play. While a recent showcase suggested a more straightforward experience compared to Insomniac’s other superhero games, Daly explained in an IGN interview that the game’s pacing is intended to feel similar to reading comic books.
This decision primarily stems from the studio wanting to create the best possible Wolverine game while staying true to Logan’s character.
According to Daly, the team envisioned Logan as a well-traveled character, constantly moving around the globe while searching for answers about his past and driven by a strong sense of responsibility. Because of this, they decided a worldwide adventure would be the perfect setting for the game, as Logan isn’t tied to any one location.
The game features a fast-paced, story-driven experience similar to reading a comic book. It’s designed to be exciting and keep you engaged from start to finish, with a series of missions propelled by key story events and developments.
The gameplay shown at Sony’s recent State of Play event gives a good idea of what to expect from the full game. Throughout Marvel’s Wolverine, players will travel to various locations around the globe as Logan’s story unfolds. Insomniac has also confirmed that stealth is optional, and players are welcome to engage in combat whenever they prefer.
As a fan, I was really excited to hear the developer explain that the gameplay trailer showed a pretty accurate slice of what we can expect. Apparently, Logan has a main goal and knows where to start, but how he gets there is up to us! The levels aren’t just one straight path either – there are different ways to tackle things. You can totally play stealthily if you want, but if you’re like me and prefer action, you can just jump right into a fight. Plus, they’re encouraging exploration! There are secrets and collectibles hidden all over the world for those of us who like to poke around and discover everything.
We wanted each area of the game to feel unique. This impacts how you move through the world and how quickly the action unfolds. As a result, gameplay varies significantly – sometimes you’ll focus on exploring and observing, other times on talking to characters, and often on stealthily hunting and defeating enemies.
When questioned about large, open areas in Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio head clarified they never intended to create an open-world or sandbox game. Instead, their goal was a fast-paced, story-driven, single-player experience, and the game’s missions are designed to reflect that focused approach.
The highly anticipated game, Marvel’s Wolverine, will be released on PlayStation 5 on September 15th. Players will be able to customize their experience by turning off graphic violence, and the game will explore the complex dynamic between Wolverine and his rival, Sabertooth.
