First launching on PlayStation in 1995, Ace Combat has become a long-lasting and popular arcade-style flight simulation series. Unlike some other games that prioritize realistic flying or over-the-top action, Ace Combat excels when it strikes a balance between the two. The latest installment, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, continues this tradition with impressive graphics and enjoyable gameplay, developed by Bandai Namco.
As a huge Ace Combat fan, I was so excited to get a sneak peek at Wings of Theve, the sequel to Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. You’re thrown right into a massive international conflict, and thankfully, you’re not alone! You fly alongside a great team of wingmen who help you tackle everything from bombing enemy targets and protecting allies, to intense dogfights where the odds are totally stacked against you. I recently got to play it at a preview event, and honestly, it’s a blast! It might not be the most realistic flight sim out there, but it’s easily one of the most fun I’ve had in the cockpit. The controls are easy to pick up, letting you jump right into the action and enjoy the ride.
Take To The Skies For Theve

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is a beautiful flight simulator that successfully combines exciting, fast-paced action with realistic aviation details. The game expands on recent Ace Combat titles, centering around a large-scale war between the Federation of Central Usea and Sotoa. Players take on the identity of “Rex,” an enigmatic pilot who must become the new “Wings of Theve,” a renowned and feared figure in the skies.
The story comes to life through detailed cutscenes and conversations between characters during missions, giving the game and its supporting cast a lot of personality. As a member of the Wings of Theve, you’ll be directly involved in the action, from aerial dogfights and bombing runs to leading seaborne invasions. The game focuses on a core group of pilots, making it easy to enjoy even if you’re new to the series, as their individual stories drive the overall narrative.
The game’s story works perfectly with its mission-based structure, unfolding through challenging objectives and emerging dangers. What’s really great is that the story feels directly connected to how well you’re flying, highlighting how crucial the gameplay is. Fortunately, the developers at Bandai Namco Aces have delivered more than just a visually stunning experience.
Eye In The Sky And Wind Beneath Your Wings

Ace Combat 8 is learning from past games and focusing on letting players customize their experience as a pilot. As you progress, you’ll unlock different aircraft and weapons, some of which are better suited for certain missions. In a multi-hour demo, ComicBook found that players had freedom in choosing their aircraft and could generally handle any situation. The game is easy to learn, letting even beginners quickly get used to the action, but mastering the challenges will still require skill.
The game’s large, outdoor arenas are great for exciting and quick combat, giving players plenty of space to move and try different tactics. However, the action really heats up when it shifts to city environments, where drone attacks and tall buildings create intense, chaotic dogfights. Despite this, the game’s smooth controls, clear camera, and adaptable radar help you stay in the fight. Plus, experimenting with different planes is enjoyable, letting you discover the best way to play that suits you.
I was really surprised by how easy it was to pick up and play! The basic controls are simple, but there’s a lot going on under the hood if you really get into the dogfights – it shows how well the game is designed. What really hooked me was that every time I played, it was just fun. There were different types of missions, and each one felt exciting, but it never got too crazy or overwhelming. It just kept me wanting to play more.
Even when the game gets tough – like when you’re fighting a huge, grounded battleship – it’s still enjoyable. While it can be frustrating to hit your targets accurately and quickly, failing a mission just makes you want to try again. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is a fantastic new installment in the series and a great game for anyone who loves fast-paced aerial combat. It’s much more like Star Fox than a realistic flight simulator; the exciting dogfights and overall fun make it a perfect choice for players who want to experience the thrill of being a fighter pilot like in Top Gun.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 2nd.
