As a huge fan, I’m completely blown away by how the battles work in this game! It’s not just about mashing buttons – you move around in real-time, but also get to actively choose commands. And the best part? You collect these amazing creatures called Familiars, and you really bond with them by feeding, training, and customizing their gear. Visually, it’s stunning – it somehow manages to look like a Studio Ghibli film come to life, with beautiful hand-drawn art. But what really makes it special is the music. Joe Hisaishi composed the score, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra performed it – it’s absolutely epic and adds so much emotion to the whole experience.
The game created a truly magical and immersive world for players. Exploring places like desert kingdoms and vast oceans felt incredibly rewarding, capturing the spirit of classic stories. Seeing the main character, Oliver, grow from a scared child into a strong wizard was emotionally impactful and made the game relatable to everyone. With its beautiful visuals and engaging gameplay, this fantastic adventure is a must-play for any PS3 owner.

In Resonance of Fate, the last of humanity lives safely inside a massive air purifier called Basel, as the Earth’s surface has become too polluted to live on. Players control Vashyron, Zephyr, and Leanne – a group of world-weary mercenaries – as they complete various jobs throughout the city and stumble upon a dangerous secret about the Zenith System. Developed by Tri-Ace and Sega, the game offers a unique cyberpunk experience that breaks away from traditional RPG gameplay.
Battles take place on a grid-based map where players plan routes for their characters to dash along. These dashes activate special moves, allowing characters to perform slow-motion flips and unleash a barrage of bullets. The combat system is unique, ditching traditional swords and magic in favor of fast-paced gunplay inspired by action movies. To deal significant damage, players must master a two-stage attack system, effectively combining two different types of attacks.
The game’s challenge came from its detailed weapon customization system, allowing players to collect parts to modify their handguns with things like scopes, barrels, and larger magazines. Visually, Fate of Resonance beautifully recreated the intricate, mechanical look of the city’s lower levels, and its powerful soundtrack, composed by Motoi Sakuraba and Kohei Tanaka, heightened the tension of the gun battles. Offering a sophisticated and visually striking experience different from typical fantasy games, this title is a standout achievement.
Valkyria Chronicles Highlights the Brutal Side of War
Valkyria Chronicles takes place on a continent torn apart by war between two powerful empires battling for a vital energy source. The story follows Welkin Gunther, a peaceful man who must lead a group of ordinary citizens – Squad 7 – to defend their neutral homeland, Gallia, from an invading empire. This critically acclaimed strategy game is celebrated for its beautiful, painterly style and its moving portrayal of war.
In Valkyria Chronicles, battles flow between a strategic overhead view and close-up, third-person control of individual soldiers thanks to the BLiTZ system. What really set the game apart was its CANVAS graphics engine, which made the 3D battlefields look beautifully hand-drawn, like a colored-pencil sketch. Players command their troops through intense combat, dodging machine-gun fire and aiming for accurate shots with snipers and powerful anti-tank weapons.
As a huge fan, what always struck me about this game is how the soldiers didn’t feel like just cannon fodder. They had their own personalities, fears – even phobias! – and relationships with each other, and all of that actually mattered in battle. It really drove home the weight of war, and the incredible music by Hitoshi Sakimoto made every mission feel like a real struggle with serious consequences. It’s a game that looks amazing, plays brilliantly with its tactical combat, and honestly, I think it’s one of the best, most overlooked games on the PS3. It’s a perfect military drama, in my opinion.
