National Treasure’s Streaming Popularity Is A Promising Sign After Recent Sequel Update

The National Treasure movies are proving popular on streaming services, which is a good indication that a third film might happen – and there’s been a recent update on its development. Nicolas Cage is known for appearing in several film series. He’s played characters like Johnny Blaze in the Ghost Rider movies, voiced Grug Crood in The Croods films, and lent his voice to Spider-Noir in Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, he’s bringing that same character to life in live-action as Spider-Noir on Prime Video.

Nicolas Cage is also well-known for the National Treasure movies. The first one came out in 2004 and featured Cage as Ben Gates, a historian on a quest for a treasure linked to American history. Jon Turteltaub directed the film, which also starred Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Jon Voight, and Sean Bean. Although critics weren’t overly impressed (it received a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie was a financial hit, earning more than $347.5 million around the world.

Released in 2007, National Treasure: Book of Secrets follows Benjamin Gates and his team as they search for proof to clear his ancestor’s name after being linked to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Like the first National Treasure movie, Book of Secrets received generally mixed reviews, earning a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, the film was commercially successful, grossing over $459.2 million globally.

Although the first two National Treasure movies were successful, a third film never materialized. A TV series, National Treasure: Edge of History, premiered in 2022, but without Nicolas Cage, and was quickly canceled after its first season. Recently, however, there’s been positive news about a third movie, and the franchise is currently doing well on streaming platforms, suggesting that people are still eager to see another National Treasure story with Ben Gates and his team.

Both National Treasure Films Are Trending On Hulu

The National Treasure movies are now streaming on Hulu and are already proving popular with viewers. Both films currently rank in the top 15 – the first at number 13 and Book of Secrets also at number 13. They’re positioned just below the 2026 film Psycho Killer and above the 2008 hit Kung Fu Panda. It’s worth mentioning that Hulu’s top 15 list combines both movies and TV series, and the new show Not Suitable For Work is currently number one.

The fact that National Treasure is doing well on Hulu proves people are still excited about this series. These movies are enjoyable adventures, and many viewers likely have fond memories of them. With almost twenty years since the last installment, a third film could be very successful, given the franchise’s continued popularity and the strong performance of the previous movies.

National Treasure 3 Is Reportedly In Development

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently gave an encouraging update on National Treasure 3. He told The Direct at the Producer’s Guild Awards that the movie is “coming along quite well” and that the script is currently being worked on. This suggests the film is actively in development, although a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

It’s still uncertain whether Nicolas Cage will reprise his role in a third National Treasure film. In 2024, he told ScreenRant that a third movie was unlikely, stating, “There is no National Treasure 3. Don’t look to Disney for treasure.” However, a year later, in an interview with MovieWeb, Cage offered a slightly more hopeful outlook, admitting, “I don’t know, but there’s been more talk about it recently.”

Although Nicolas Cage isn’t sure if another National Treasure movie will be made, he’d consider returning if the project gets underway. His involvement could make the third film very successful. The recent popularity of National Treasure on Hulu proves there’s still a strong audience eager for more historical treasure hunts.
