Update [Sat 6th Jun 2026, 5pm]:
Following some issues with the recent upgrade to Marathon’s Deluxe Edition, Bungie is giving all players who purchased it full access to the original game.
Players who tried the free trial of this week’s shooting game found they could buy an upgrade to the full game for $14.99 on the PlayStation Store. However, the description made it seem like this upgrade would give them complete access, which isn’t true.
Bungie tried to fix the confusing wording later, but players who acted on the original, unclear message felt it was unfair to then be locked out of the complete game.
The developers have confirmed they’ll fulfill purchases made before the PlayStation Store description was updated. This means anyone who bought the Deluxe Edition upgrade will now receive the complete game for only $14.99.
I think this is a good move, especially since the initial description of the game was confusing. Sales for Marathon haven’t been great, so giving away a few extra copies could really help – and hopefully encourage people who receive them to spread positive feedback.
Bungie often makes mistakes, but it’s unclear who’s responsible for this recent one.
Basically, the game developer is offering a free week to try out the first-person shooter, Marathon, to celebrate the launch of its Season 2 update.
Players who tried the game’s trial version found they could upgrade to the full Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 5 for $14.99. This is happening because the PlayStation Store recognizes them as already owning the base game through the trial.
Importantly, the product page states that the Deluxe Edition comes with the complete Marathon game, plus extra cosmetic items and other goodies.
However, people were actually purchasing the Deluxe Edition upgrade, which surprisingly doesn’t include the complete game. This is because the PlayStation Store assumes they already have access to it through the free trial. Is that making sense?
That page has since been updated to clarify anyone who buys it will not receive the full game at all.
The disclaimer reads:
So, if you jumped in and downloaded Marathon during that free Open Play Week, but haven’t actually bought the game yet, here’s what you need to know…
Buying this product gives you access to the Deluxe Edition content during the Open Play Week only. After that week, you’ll need to buy the Marathon Standard Edition to continue enjoying this content.
The price you see is only for the extra content in the Deluxe Edition, and doesn’t include the price of the Standard Edition.
This situation is frustrating because the initial description was inaccurate. Although the clarification is helpful, Sony should still fulfill the original terms of purchase.
Ultimately, Marathon wants as many people playing as possible, so it doesn’t make sense to me that they aren’t simply granting full access to everyone who already purchased it.
At the very least, I hope anyone who spent money gets a refund.
