Another Promising AAA RPG Has Been Quietly Scrapped, And This One Really Hurts

Recent years have brought a lot of cancelled games, and some were particularly disappointing. We’ve already lost the Wonder Woman game from Monolith Productions and the D&D RPG from Giant Skull. Now, Paramount Games Studio has announced that one highly anticipated AAA role-playing game won’t be happening either. It’s a real letdown.

In 2024, Saber Interactive and Paramount revealed plans for a role-playing game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. The game would have allowed players to create and play as a new Avatar, set long before the events of the popular animated series. Unfortunately, IGN recently reported that Paramount Games Studio has cancelled the project. It’s rare to be so disappointed by the cancellation of a game we barely knew anything about.

Avatar: Ice Wars RPG Is Officially Not Happening

Paramount Games Studio recently confirmed to IGN that the previously cancelled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin game is back in development following the merger with Skydance. However, a role-playing game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently not in the works. The studio stated the Avatar project hadn’t even begun production when the merger happened. Going forward, Paramount Games will only announce games that are close to release. While an Avatar RPG isn’t happening right now, it’s possible the studio could revisit the idea once they’re further along in development.

The ambitious Avatar RPG, once known as Ice Wars, has unfortunately been cancelled. We’d been excited about the game, which promised an immersive story where players would control the Avatar and learn to master all four elements. After a brief announcement in 2024, Saber Interactive and Paramount stopped sharing updates, and now we understand why. The project, at least in its original vision and with the original development team, is no longer moving forward. It’s a real disappointment, as the initial concept sounded very promising.

Even though Avatar: The Last Airbender is still incredibly popular, no one has yet created a role-playing game (RPG) that fully lets fans step into that world. However, Avatar fans will get a new game in 2026: Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, published by Paramount, is scheduled to release on July 23rd. While it’s not the immersive RPG some were hoping for – like the previously planned Ice Wars – it will allow players to battle as Aang, Katara, Korra, and other beloved characters from the series.

Fans are hoping for a role-playing game (RPG) set in the world of Avatar, and it seems Paramount isn’t ruling it out, even though their initial plans fell through. If a game does happen, it sounds like it will probably feature characters we already know and love, rather than the new characters planned for the previous attempt.
