Gears of War: E-Day Is Not Coming to PS5, Xbox Confirms Console Exclusivity

Update #3 [Sun 7th Jun 2026, 6:01pm]:

During the Xbox Showcase, Microsoft announced that Gears of War: E-Day will launch as an exclusive title for Xbox consoles on October 6th. While the game will also be available on PC, it won’t be released on PlayStation 5.

There’s no word of timed exclusivity here, so presumably it’s permanent.

Update #2 [Sun 7th Jun 2026, 3pm]:

Okay, so this is pretty exciting! It looks like Gears of War: E-Day might actually be coming to the PS5! I just saw that the European ratings board, PEGI, rated the game for Sony’s console, which is a really good sign. Fingers crossed this means it’s really happening!

Either Jeff Grubb is incorrect, or this decision was made very recently – possibly within the last few weeks or even days.

Recent rumors have been swirling about whether Gears of War: E-Day will be released on the PlayStation 5. Now, trusted insider billbil-kun has shared some information on the topic.

He can’t confirm or deny it, but he’s found evidence of a product code for a physical PS5 version of the game. This supports a previous rumor from Jeff Grubb that the game was originally intended for PlayStation, but plans changed recently.

Billbil-kun announced that pre-orders for the game will be available on Xbox and PC right after today’s Xbox Showcase.

Gears of War: E-Day was being created for the PlayStation 5, but recent reports suggest Xbox has canceled the project.

Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb shared on a recent livestream that the third-person shooter is likely to be the final game presented at today’s Xbox Showcase.

This new game from The Coalition is noteworthy because it’s one of the few Microsoft games currently in development that won’t also be released on PlayStation 5. Microsoft has already announced that titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable will be available on Sony’s console.

Here’s what Grubb said:

The planned PlayStation 5 version of ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ has been cancelled. This was a recent decision, and it seems like a shift in strategy. The developers are now prioritizing Xbox exclusives, seemingly to boost console sales, despite previously considering multi-platform releases.

This information is currently unconfirmed, but it’s likely reliable because the source, Mark Grubb, is usually accurate.

Gears of War first came to PlayStation 5 last year with the release of ‘Reloaded,’ which appeared to be an introduction to the series for new players on that platform.

If this is accurate, it matches recent statements from Xbox leadership. Since Asha Sharma became an executive, she’s suggested that Xbox might start offering exclusive games again.

This is quite different from what Microsoft has said in the past, including praise from CEO Satya Nadella for the division’s contributions to the PlayStation 5.

I’m hoping to get a clearer idea of where Xbox is heading later today, but honestly, all this back-and-forth is starting to really frustrate me. It feels like they can’t make up their minds!
