As a huge fan of superhero cartoons, I’m so excited about all the new and returning shows! This year alone we’re getting fresh seasons of Batman: Caped Crusader, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and X-Men ’97, plus more Invincible and Marvel Zombies. But with so many great options out there, it got me thinking about the best of the best. So, I’ve put together a list ranking my top 7 animated superhero shows of all time!
7. Spider-Man: The Animated Series

While not groundbreaking, Spider-Man: The Animated Series successfully followed the formula of X-Men and brought many of Spider-Man’s most famous stories to life with a fresh approach. The show also gave great attention to Spider-Man’s villains, and the action sequences were exciting, capturing the character’s signature humor and energy. Though the animation isn’t always perfect, the show’s strengths far outweigh its flaws, making it a worthwhile watch.
6. The Tick

When most animated superhero shows were made by DC or Marvel, The Tick stood out by being uniquely itself. The series was different from everything else at the time, thanks to its funny characters, clever writing, and over-the-top villains and situations. It’s a true animated classic that remains enjoyable even now.
5. Teen Titans Go!

There have been lots of different versions of DC Comics characters, but Teen Titans Go! is truly unique. The show follows Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven, and Cyborg on incredibly silly and unpredictable adventures. It’s often strange, self-aware, and consistently funny, with characters that are lovable and amusing. The series is also unafraid to poke fun at itself – and it’s definitely shown us just how small Robin’s hands are!
4. Justice League Unlimited

The original Justice League series was great, but Justice League Unlimited is even better. It featured a much larger team of heroes, which led to more diverse and unforgettable episodes. The show gave lesser-known characters like The Question, Huntress, and Booster Gold a chance to shine alongside DC’s biggest stars. It remains one of the best animated DC series ever made.
3. X-Men: The Animated Series

As a longtime fan, I can honestly say X-Men: The Animated Series completely redefined what a superhero cartoon could be. It tackled the complex, emotional heart of the X-Men stories, but in a way that even kids could grasp. For many, including myself, this show is the definitive version of these characters, which is why the excitement around X-Men ’97 was so huge. But let’s not forget the original – it absolutely deserves all the praise and a place among the greats.
2. Invincible

While many animated shows since the 90s have been great, Invincible stands out for its unique combination of complex stories and intense action. Over its four seasons, the show has crafted an epic narrative with surprisingly shocking moments, and it’s even surpassed the quality of the excellent original comic books. It’s so exceptional that only one series is better, which really highlights just how special Invincible is—and it’s still ongoing!
1. Batman: The Animated Series

Even today, many consider Batman: The Animated Series to be the best, and a benchmark for all other superhero shows. Its unique blend of retro-futuristic visuals, film noir atmosphere, and sophisticated stories created a lasting and iconic portrayal of Batman, Gotham, and his enemies. It truly raised the bar for the genre, and for many fans, it remains the greatest of all time – a title it’s likely to hold for a long time to come.
