After recently showing off Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition has shared more information about the new game. In an interview with XBOX Wire, creative director Matt Searcy, brand director Nicole Fawcette, art director Aryan Hanbeck, and technical director Kate Rayner explained how they plan to revitalize the Gears of War franchise.
Rayner announced that Gears of War: E-Day will be the first Gears of War game developed by The Coalition using completely new assets and animations. For the past ten years, the studio has been continuously updating and building upon existing Gears of War games – including Gears of War 4, Gears 5, the Hivebusters expansion, Gears Tactics, and even the mobile game Gears Pop!. This meant they were always working with, and adapting, code and resources from previous titles.
Unlike previous versions, Gears of War: E-Day is a completely new creation, with all its levels, characters, animations, enemies, weapons, and sound effects built from the ground up. According to studio head Searcy, the Unreal Engine 5 was essential in making this possible.
According to Searcy, they used Unreal Engine 5 to modernize Gears of War while staying true to its roots. The goal was to deliver the intense, competitive Gears experience players love, but rebuilt from the ground up to recapture the feeling of the original games.
According to Hanbeck, a key feature of Unreal Engine 5 used during the development of Gears of War: E-Day was the MegaLights lighting system. The team aimed to recapture the atmospheric horror elements of the original Gears of War, and MegaLights allowed them to create levels with a particularly moody and immersive lighting design.
The team aimed to emphasize the naturally creepy side of Gears, which has always been present in the series. They wanted to play with contrasts between light and darkness, explore more frightening environments, and use dramatic shadows. New technology now allows them to achieve these effects more effectively than ever before.
If you’re going to tell that story, it needs to be accompanied by strong visuals. The story is powerful and deserves to be presented with impact.
Fawcette confirmed Rayner’s point, explaining that every single element in E-Day was created specifically for the game.
The studio didn’t stop at just creating new visuals for Gears of War: E-Day. The team also completely rethought the gameplay. According to Searcy, they wanted to create a game that captured the feel of classic Gears, but offered a fresh and modern experience – recapturing the excitement of the original games, but with updated mechanics and the benefits of a new game engine.
The highly anticipated game Gears of War: E-Day was recently shown off, and The Coalition confirmed it will run at a smooth 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled in the story campaign, and even faster at 120 FPS in multiplayer. The game will be available exclusively on Xbox Series X/S consoles and PC, and is scheduled to launch on October 6th.
