The screenplay for the Death Stranding movie is almost finished, and it features several significant differences from the video game.
The live-action Death Stranding movie, originally revealed in 2022, is a collaboration between Kojima Productions, Hammerstone Studios, and A24.
Okay, so it sounds like they’re finally starting to make the next one! The writer and director, Michael Sarnoski, just told IGN that the script is almost finished, which is huge news. I’m getting hyped – hopefully, we’ll see some actual production stuff happening soon!
Sarnoski said she’s currently writing the script and is looking forward to really getting into the project once it’s finished.

The director of films like A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig recently discussed collaborating with Hideo Kojima, the creator of Death Stranding, and shared details about how the script for their project has been received.
I’ve been discussing the project with Hideo Kojima and A24, and they’ve had a chance to review an early version. We’re currently making some changes based on their feedback, and everyone is really enthusiastic about how it’s going.
It’s notable that despite Hideo Kojima usually being very hands-on with his work, the film’s director, Sarnoski, has been given considerable creative freedom. The movie doesn’t actually follow the story or characters from the games at all.
Sarnoski shared that Kojima was incredibly supportive, allowing him to create his own story and characters within the established game world. He emphasized the importance of staying true to the game and delivering something fans would enjoy.

“So it’s been a great process so far, and I’m really excited to share it.”
Sarnoski compared the opportunity to share his personal story to his experience working on A Quiet Place: Day One. He explained that he appreciated being able to create his own characters and explore themes that were important to him within the established world of the film.
Death Stranding really focuses on themes of connection and self-expression, and because of that, it was simple to find a character that felt like a natural fit for the game’s world and one I could fully commit to playing.
While fans of the games will recognize some characters in the film, the director, Sarnoski, emphasizes that it’s a separate story. He sees it as existing within the same universe as the game, respecting the game’s events, but ultimately being its own unique experience.
