Kevin Costner‘s iconic fantasy film from 1989 gets an unfortunate new update from Netflix.
Kevin Costner is a celebrated actor known for his roles in popular films like The Bodyguard, JFK, and Dances with Wolves. He won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director for Dances with Wolves, and was also nominated for Best Actor. He’s also explored fantasy films, including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld.
Netflix has announced that the classic movie Field of Dreams will no longer be available on its platform in the United States after July 1st. That means June 30th is the last day to watch it on Netflix.
Several movies and shows are being removed from Netflix on the same day as Field of Dreams. These include American Hustle, Bohemian Rhapsody, Deepwater Horizon, the 2004 version of Hellboy, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, all three Madagascar movies plus Penguins of Madagascar, My Best Friend’s Wedding, My Girl, Steel Magnolias, and The Wiz. Also leaving are The Bernie Mac Show and the original series Between.
Netflix is losing some movies and shows, but it will be adding new titles on July 1st. These include A Dog’s Journey, A Dog’s Purpose, Gone Girl, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is part of Netflix’s regular practice of updating its selection of licensed content.
By 1989, Kevin Costner was already known for films like Silverado and The Untouchables. That year, he starred in Field of Dreams, a sports drama directed by Phil Alden Robinson. In the movie, he plays a farmer who, after hearing the voice say, “If you build it, he will come,” builds a baseball field in his cornfield. The field then becomes a place where the ghosts of legendary baseball players can find peace.
Costner starred in Field of Dreams alongside James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster, and Timothy Busfield. The film was a box office success, earning $84.5 million, and has received positive reviews, currently holding an 88% rating from critics and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
Following the success of Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner continued to establish himself as a major actor. He starred in several popular films, including The Bodyguard, JFK, Dances with Wolves, as well as Wyatt Earp, Man of Steel, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Hidden Figures.
Kevin Costner has also appeared in television roles, notably in the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, which won him an Emmy Award for his leading performance. He also starred in the popular series Yellowstone, earning him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama.
