Because he refuses to kill criminals, Batman frequently clashes with the same enemies in Gotham City. Recently, one of his oldest foes died, but it wasn’t at Batman’s doing.
DC Comics has brought Dr. Hugo Strange’s reign to a bloody end in Batman #10.
In the newest issue of Batman’s ongoing comic series, the villain Hugo Strange is violently killed by the Minotaur and his secret organization, Torus. This attack was payback for Strange betraying Tozuki-San.
Okay, so things really escalated! It turns out Doctor Strange basically started a war with Tozuki Petrochemicals – they’re the ones who supply everything Torus needs. The crazy part? Strange sent his Monster Men after a group of assassins he himself had hired through Tozuki! Everyone saw it as a direct attack on Torus, and sadly, it led to the shocking death of that Gotham criminal. It was a total mess, and it felt like Strange was intentionally causing trouble for the whole organization.
As a huge Batman fan, I was really struck by the recent passing of a classic villain. It’s wild to think this character – a brilliant psychiatrist, chemist, and biologist – was actually created way back in 1940 with Bruce Wayne himself by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. He first appeared in Detective Comics #36, which is amazing because that was before even the Joker or Catwoman showed up! It just shows how long he’s been a part of the Batman universe.
Okay, so it’s interesting – this isn’t actually the first time we’ve seen Hugo Strange die in a DC comic! Usually, it turns out he faked his own death, which is just classic Strange. But this time, it really feels different, like this one might actually stick. It’s a little unsettling, honestly!
This happens before the villain can become as well-known in live-action films as other Batman enemies who appeared after his initial fight with the hero. While he hasn’t yet made a cinematic debut, he’s a recurring character in animated shows and video games, and previously appeared in the popular TV series Gotham.
If this truly marks the end of Doctor Strange’s appearances in the main DC universe, it’s a significant loss – though Gotham City might see it as a win. Still, there’s no shortage of other dangerous criminals out there.
Batman Has Introduced More DC Villains Into A New Series
Batman is known for having one of the most famous and diverse groups of villains in comic book history, even considering the entire history of DC Comics. Recently, writer Matt Fraction has introduced some unexpected twists to these classic characters.
The current Batman comic series, which has received a lot of praise, has featured several villains being defeated, with Dr. Hugo Strange being the latest. One example is , who was ultimately captured and held in Arkham Asylum using a nearly impossible-to-escape method: he’s kept submerged in a water tank, supplied with air, and connected to a computer that allows him to speak.
Whenever one villain is defeated, several new ones seem to appear. The enigmatic figure mentioned earlier is just the first of many, with hints of even more to come in the series.
A new cover for Batman Issue #12, coming out August 5th, hints at a major threat to Gotham City. Artist Ryan Sook’s cover depicts Batman surrounded by a group of villains represented as oversized chess pieces. While the identities of these villains haven’t been announced, the artwork suggests they’ll be a formidable and disturbing group.
I’m really digging the current Batman run! The writing by Chip Fraction is fantastic, and the art by Jorge Jiménez is just incredible – it really brings Gotham to life. It’s easily one of my favorite comic series right now.
Batman #10 is now available to find in stores and on most digital reading platforms.
