He quickly finds himself facing off against pirates, led by the unforgettable Long John Silver. It’s no surprise the book became a hit right away and remains a hugely influential adventure story. Because of its popularity, there have been so many adaptations! Disney’s 1950 film is a classic, and I also enjoyed the 1973 animated version from Warner Bros. But for many, the 1996 Muppet Treasure Island is the most beloved. The story has even been brilliantly updated with a sci-fi spin in Treasure Planet, and expanded upon in a really compelling way with the Black Sails series, which actually tells the story of what happened before the events of Treasure Island.

The latest film adaptation of Treasure Island offers a fresh perspective, but even previous attempts – like Treasure Planet and Muppets Treasure Island – have proven successful. This is largely due to the enduring appeal of the original story. The classic tale of a young person setting out on a risky adventure for a great reward is universally relatable and timeless. Plus, pirate stories naturally lend themselves to exciting cinematic interpretations.
