20 Years Later, Acclaimed Classic Confirms Surprise Anime Revival

The anime and manga world is largely driven by content aimed at young boys, known as ‘Shonen,’ with many popular series focusing on action and fighting. Some of the best-selling manga ever, like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Demon Slayer, fall into this category. Often, a manga’s success is boosted by its anime adaptation, which is why series published in Shonen Jump usually get an anime version within a couple of years. While manga aimed at young girls, or ‘Shojo,’ doesn’t always achieve the same level of worldwide popularity, it frequently offers some of the most original and creative stories you’ll find.

The 1990s were a fantastic time for Japanese comics, especially for both action-packed Shonen and romance-focused Shojo series, many of which are still beloved today. However, despite positive reviews and dedicated fans, a lot of these great Shojo comics never got turned into animated series. One example is Red River by Chie Shinohara, which ran in Sho-Comi magazine from 1995 to 2002. This popular fantasy story was highly praised and even won a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2000. Now, over thirty years after it first appeared, an anime adaptation of Red River is finally in the works.

When Will Red River Premiere?

I’m so excited! The anime is officially coming this July as part of the Summer 2026 season! The news was just posted on the official X account. We don’t have a trailer yet, but they did release a beautiful key visual showing off the main characters. And get this – it’s being produced by VAP and the legendary Tatsunoko Production, a studio that’s been around since 1962! Seriously, this is shaping up to be amazing.

The studio behind popular anime like Ping Pong the Animation and Neon Genesis Evangelion has released a new character visual from Chie Shinohara, a highly celebrated manga artist. Details about where to stream the anime and who will voice the characters haven’t been announced yet. With the premiere just months away, we can expect more information to be revealed soon.
