After recent discussions about the show’s direction, the BBC announced it will be opening up production of Doctor Who to bids from different companies this year. This means Russell T Davies will be leaving his role as head writer and producer after the 2025 Christmas special, as there won’t be a special in 2026.

To ensure the show continues for years to come and follows BBC guidelines, the BBC will be seeking bids from production companies this year for the future of Doctor Who.

Russell T Davies, back as the lead producer for the show’s 60th anniversary, announced on Instagram that he’s leaving the role again.

Because we now have a clear plan for the future, we won’t be doing a Christmas special. We initially created it as a safety net when things were uncertain, but that’s no longer necessary.

This news arrives a little over a year after the Doctor Who episode ‘The Reality War,’ which featured Ncuti Gatwa leaving his role as the Doctor. In that episode, his version of the Doctor regenerated into the returning character played by Billie Piper.
