This means Russell T Davies will be leaving his role as head writer and producer after the 2025 Christmas special, as there won’t be a special in 2026.
To ensure the show continues for years to come and follows BBC guidelines, the BBC will be seeking bids from production companies this year for the future of Doctor Who.

However, to ensure the show has a strong future, we’ve decided against a single special episode and are instead focusing on investing in future series. This will allow the show to return with the quality and scope that fans deserve.

The BBC owns all intellectual property rights for Doctor Who. BBC Studios will continue to handle distribution worldwide, plus licensing, merchandise, and digital experiences for the show, representing the BBC.

This news arrives a little over a year after the Doctor Who episode ‘The Reality War,’ which featured Ncuti Gatwa leaving his role as the Doctor. In that episode, his version of the Doctor regenerated into the returning character played by Billie Piper.
