Fable will have over 150,000 lines of dialogue, with a thousand NPCs for you to mess with

I was so excited to hear from some of the people actually making the new Fable game! I got to listen in on a chat with them right after they revealed the latest trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase.

During a private demonstration, the game’s developers showed us what the game offers beyond the main story – they call it the ‘game within the game.’ They explained that this side content is designed to provide almost endless activities for players who want to explore it.

Albion, the game’s expansive open world, features a variety of towns and settlements for players to explore. Each town is populated with characters who have full voice acting and offer many opportunities for engaging interactions.

The developers demonstrated the game by showing how players can become part of a community. They completed a series of tasks – rescuing a talking pig, purchasing a pub, helping someone find work and buying a house – which ultimately led to them forming a relationship with a local shopkeeper.

In Fable, everything you do affects how people see you. If you’re violent, locals will distrust and fear you. But if you help others, they’ll see you as a hero.

Hey, so this site uses a security thing called Google reCAPTCHA to help keep things safe from bots. Before it loads anything, it asks for my permission – basically, it wants to let me know it might use cookies. If I click ‘Accept and continue,’ it’ll load reCAPTCHA and do its job. It’s just a heads-up about how it works!

What really stood out in the demo was how responsive the characters were. No matter what the player did, the other characters always had a reaction or comment, as if they had a line prepared for every situation.

Compared to many games where NPCs only have a few lines, it’s obvious a lot of work went into the writing, direction, and performances in this game.

I noticed Fable’s game director, Ralph Futton, quietly observing until I mentioned the detailed side quests. He seemed happy someone recognized the effort put into those optional activities – which, of course, aren’t the core focus of the game.

According to Futton, the game features over 150,000 lines of dialogue, recorded by multiple studios over more than 1,000 hours. Players will also encounter 1,000 unique characters, and have the freedom to significantly impact their lives.

You can choose to attack others, but a bounty system will hunt you if you become a criminal. Expect guards to pursue you, citizens to dislike you, and towns to recover if you significantly reduce their numbers.

Futton playfully mentioned that a huge number of British voice actors are working on the game. We’re excited to see the complete list of actors, but we already know some well-known names like Richard Ayoade and Hayley Atwell will be involved.

We’re definitely keeping an eye on this game and will share more details as the release date gets closer. Stay tuned for updates!

Fable is coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC on 23 February 2027.
