The first four Toy Story films largely focused on Woody and his connection with Andy as Andy grew up. However, at the end of Toy Story 4, Woody chose to become a lost toy, signaling the end of his story. For Toy Story to continue, a new character needed to take the lead. This summer’s Toy Story 5 centers on Jessie, a beloved character, as she deals with Bonnie’s growing interest in technology. While Jessie seems like a fitting choice to lead the film, the filmmakers are taking the story in a different direction.
While promoting Toy Story 5 (coming to theaters June 19th), co-director Kenna Harris and producer Lindsey Collins discussed potential main characters for future Toy Story movies. Harris voted for Slinky Dog, playfully suggesting he’s “got a long enough back to carry” the story, and also expressed interest in exploring new tech-based toys, specifically mentioning Smarty Pants as a character with potential.
Collins said the three tech experts in the movie have great chemistry and are really fun to watch together. Now that they’ve had a chance to work together, she thinks they’ll be eager for more opportunities to collaborate.
Could Bonnie’s Tech Toys Become the New Toy Story Leads?

The central idea behind Toy Story 5 is a clash between classic toys and new technology. Jessie and the other toys worry they’ll be replaced when Bonnie becomes obsessed with her tablet, Lilypad, and other electronic toys – one of which is voiced by Conan O’Brien. While promotional materials initially presented these tech toys as something the original toys need to overcome, Pixar is now suggesting that technology could become a major theme for the Toy Story series in the future.
So, I was reading about Toy Story 5, and director Andrew Stanton said something that really stuck with me. He basically admitted that technology is the biggest challenge the toys have ever faced – like, it’s a threat they can’t really overcome in the usual way. For four movies, Woody and the gang always figured things out, but Stanton thinks technology is just…different. It got me thinking – what if this time, the toys don’t win? What if Bonnie ends up moving on and connecting more with her newer, tech-based toys like Lilypad and Smarty Pants? It’s a pretty bleak thought for a lifelong Toy Story fan like me, but it sounds like that’s a real possibility!
It would be a big surprise for fans of Toy Story, especially since the planned story for Toy Story 5, focusing on Jessie, has been so well-received. However, a change in focus could be a good move, particularly if people like the new toys being introduced. After five films centered on the same group of toys, even Pixar might be feeling that this storyline is coming to a natural end. The series has already shown a child growing up, and now it’s exploring how technology fits into that world. Beyond a few jokes about Slinky Dog, none of the other toys really stand out as obvious candidates to take the lead. Jessie was a good fit because she’s been important in previous films, like Toy Story 2, but the others have always seemed more like supporting characters.
Focusing future stories on the tech toys could revitalize the series. Given how much technology impacts our lives, Pixar could explore current social issues in a natural way. It would also be compelling to see Lilypad and Smarty Pants face their own struggles, especially considering how quickly technology changes – what’s cutting-edge today can be outdated tomorrow. Pixar could create a really touching story by showing these toys grappling with that reality.
