More details have emerged about James Handy‘s death.
Following the unexpected death of the actor from Top Gun: Maverick, authorities have confirmed he died from a stab wound to his chest and neck injuries, as reported by People magazine based on records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office on June 5th, 81-year-old Handy was stabbed to death on June 3rd at his home in Tarzana, Los Angeles. The alleged attacker was Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill. The three of them lived together.
Police charged 44-year-old Gledhill with murder, stating that he used a knife during the crime, according to a press release issued on June 5th.
In a statement following Handy’s death, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said, “No one should die like this – stabbed and left to die in a front yard.”
James Handy deserved to enjoy his retirement after a lifetime of hard work, surrounded by family and friends. As with any victim of murder, his life had value, and the person responsible for this senseless act of violence needs to face justice.

On June 3rd, Los Angeles police received a 911 call from someone who claimed to be “the son of man” and said they had killed “the man of sin,” according to a statement released by the LAPD as reported in the Los Angeles Times.
Upon arrival at the home, they found Handy stabbed and lying in the front yard.
According to the L.A. Times, Michael reportedly stopped police and confessed he was the suspect they were searching for, as stated in a press release.
While Michael was arrested, Handy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
