Superhero stories are consistently popular with audiences today, leading to a surge in the number of characters appearing in TV shows and movies. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s TV shows have successfully brought many Marvel comics to life, and DC Comics have seen similar adaptations. Beyond these major franchises, numerous other superhero series have emerged, drawing inspiration from various sources or classic genre elements. A common thread in nearly all superhero narratives is the presence of a villain.
The most compelling villains on TV, particularly in superhero shows, are often overwhelmingly powerful, creating a huge danger to the world around them. These shows frequently feature exceptionally strong antagonists who require a team of heroes to defeat them. Here’s a ranking of the most powerful villains we’ve encountered in superhero TV series so far.
7) Homelander

From the start, The Boys quickly became known as an exceptionally violent superhero show, and a lot of that comes down to the character Homelander. He’s a twisted, self-absorbed take on Superman, with incredible powers that actually grow even stronger by the end of the series. While incredibly powerful, his biggest flaw is his emotional state, which holds him back from being truly unstoppable.
6) Gravik

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen some truly strong villains appear in its TV shows. While Gravik might not be the most impressive of them all, he’s definitely a dangerous threat. He’s already a skilled fighter and can shapeshift as a Skrull, but he also gains incredible power by absorbing the DNA of various heroes and villains – a process called the Harvest. This turns him into a super-powered version of the Super Skrull who could have caused major damage to the MCU if G’iah hadn’t stepped in to stop him.
5) Vandal Savage

As a critic, I’ve always been fascinated by Vandal Savage. He really became a standout villain in the Arrowverse, popping up all over, especially in Legends of Tomorrow. The core of his threat? He’s immortal. And after centuries, that translates into a lot of skills and powers. He’s undeniably powerful – one of the most formidable villains the Arrowverse has given us, and even a strong presence in the broader superhero TV landscape. However, he’s limited by being Earthbound, which, honestly, keeps him from reaching the same heights as some of the truly cosmic-level villains we’ve seen elsewhere.
4) Mephisto

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen a lot of powerful magic users, but Mephisto is likely the strongest and most evil of them all. As a demon, his powers allow him to bend reality, making him one of the MCU’s most magically gifted beings. Although his debut in the Ironheart show didn’t fully showcase his abilities, he’s already established as a remarkably powerful villain within the MCU.
3) Death

Despite only appearing briefly in Agatha All Along, Death is already proving to be one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the personification of death and decay, she’s a cosmic being who can’t be harmed by physical attacks. This makes her incredibly powerful – far beyond any human or demonic villain we’ve seen so far.
2) Darkseid

The TV show Smallville used a lot of DC Comics villains, but Darkseid was by far the most formidable. Even though he didn’t appear much and his incredible power was mostly hinted at, he stands out as one of the most powerful villains ever featured on a superhero TV show. What makes him even more dangerous than villains like Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the deep-seated corruption and malice that motivates him, making him a truly terrifying adversary.
1) The Anti-Monitor

As a huge fan of superhero TV, I have to say the Anti-Monitor was something else. He wasn’t just the biggest bad in the Arrowverse, but honestly, I think he was the most powerful villain ever seen on a superhero show. His goal was total destruction – wiping out the entire multiverse, and he actually managed it, even if it didn’t last forever. He was just on another level, with powers and a scope that made every other villain look small. Seriously, he was a genuinely terrifying and impressive threat.
