Many fans consider Dynasty Warriors 3 to be a top choice, and I wouldn’t disagree. Both Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4 are standouts in the series, and definitely worth playing if you’re interested. However, I believe Dynasty Warriors 4 best captures the feel of the games on the PlayStation 2.

5) Shinobi

I remember getting super hyped for the Shinobi game that dropped in 2002! It had been ages – like seven years since the last one – and I was worried they’d mess it up trying to go 3D. But honestly, the transition looked really smooth, which was a huge relief.

The combat in this game is fast and relies on chaining attacks together – it was great when it came out and still feels good today! Be warned, though: it’s quite challenging. While some levels aren’t designed perfectly and the camera can be a bit awkward at times, overall it’s a really fun, old-school hack-and-slash game that successfully revived the series.

Kingdom Hearts 2 successfully blends fast-paced action with role-playing elements. Building on the success of the first game, the sequel significantly improved the combat system. While Kingdom Hearts 2 is known for its fast-paced combat, it’s so much more than just an action game. That said, when comparing just the combat to other action games, it doesn’t quite reach the same heights.

3) Onimusha 3: Samurai’s Destiny

The story in Onimusha is definitely unusual. The main character, Samanosuke Akechi, unexpectedly finds himself in the future and switches lives with a French man named Jacques Blanc – who is portrayed by actor Jean Reno. They’re then forced to fight each other’s conflicts across different time periods, and Blanc’s actions in the past directly impact Akechi in the future.

Despite a few odd choices, the game is surprisingly enjoyable, mainly because the fighting is excellent and the controls are much better. The opening cutscene, which was brilliantly choreographed by Donnie Yen, is also a highlight. It’s a bit short, but if you’re interested in the Onimusha series, this third installment is a great place to start.

2) God of War 2

Let’s talk about some truly great games. Either God of War or God of War II on the PlayStation 2 would be excellent choices here – you can’t go wrong with either! While Kratos’ initial adventure is fantastic, I personally prefer the second game.

Building on what made the first game great, this sequel delivers even more exciting and rewarding battles. The developers at Sony Santa Monica refined the already strong combat system, making it incredibly smooth and polished. Add to that a better story and perfectly balanced gameplay, and you’ve got one of the best games on the PlayStation 2. While the ending felt a bit abrupt, it’s less of an issue now since you can easily continue the story in God of War 3.

1) Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening

The Devil May Cry series from Capcom offers great choices for players. Both the original and the third games are fantastic and provide hours of entertainment. However, it’s best to skip the second game, as it was a disappointing experience and didn’t live up to its predecessors due to issues during development.

In my opinion, Devil May Cry 3 is the best game in the series. It’s incredibly stylish and has some of the most satisfying combat. While the North American version was a bit more challenging than the original Japanese release, overcoming that difficulty feels even more rewarding. However, I’d recommend avoiding the PC version, as it had a lot of issues.
