Netflix has been consistently releasing popular anime series and films all year, with titles like Love Through a Prism, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, and Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai. As summer approaches, they’re adding even more new content, including Sparks of Tomorrow from the renowned Kyoto Animation studio. Established in 1985, Kyoto Animation is famous for critically acclaimed series such as Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice. Sparks of Tomorrow was announced earlier this year, and its release is fast approaching. Fans attending Anime Expo will get a sneak peek – the first two episodes will be screened on July 3rd at 10:00 A.M. in the JW Marriott Platinum Ballroom.
Anime Expo, a popular annual convention in California celebrating Japanese animation and culture, has been running for over thirty years. It’s a place to get the latest news, exclusive merchandise, attend panels and workshops, and find out about upcoming shows. This year’s event takes place from July 2nd to 5th, with more details on specific panels coming soon. Fans can look forward to updates on new anime series as well as appearances related to favorites like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
When Is Sparks of Tomorrow Coming Out?
I’m so excited to share that this anime is coming to Netflix with new episodes dropping every week starting July 5th, 2026! And for those of us who love watching things as they air in Japan, it’ll also be broadcast on networks like ABC TV, TOKYO MX, TV Aichi, and BS11. It’s going to premiere exclusively on Netflix after its initial run, but we’ll get a sneak peek at the convention first! What really has me thrilled is that Minaru Ota – you might know their amazing work from titles like A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, and Liz and the Blue Bird – is directing. Seriously, this is going to be incredible!
What Is Sparks of Tomorrow About?
The new anime series adapts a popular light novel by Hiro Yuki, with illustrations by Kazumi Ikeda. It’s set in an alternate early 1900s Kyoto that looks very different from our world – it’s covered in grime and smoke due to the widespread use of steam-powered technology.
As the world excitedly embraces electricity and a new era, Kihachi Sakamoto is mourning the loss of his brother, a shared dreamer. He’s haunted by a puzzling dream from the past and is searching for its meaning.
Inaoko Momonkawa is a deeply religious girl haunted by regret after losing her mother. When she meets another traveler, they begin a journey together to discover the secrets of the Electrical Catalog and expose a hidden darkness.
