Justin Trudeau Addresses Missing Canada World Cup Game for Katy Perry

Justin Trudeau’s plans raised some eyebrows last Friday night.

He didn’t cause a scene by dancing on tables or running through the park naked. Instead, the former Canadian Prime Minister spent June 12th watching the United States play in their first 2026 FIFA World Cup game—and in doing so, he missed Canada’s own opening match.

As Justin Trudeau noted, his partner, Katy Perry, was performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup before the United States men’s soccer match.

I sometimes have to support my partner, as anyone would,” Trudeau posted on Twitter after someone pointed out he wasn’t at the Canadian hockey game. “But of course I’m still cheering for Canada to win the championship!”

And indeed, the 54-year-old drove his message home with a Canadian flag emoji capping off his note.

Katy Perry performed at SoFi Stadium on June 12th, sharing the stage with artists like Tyla, Future, Anitta, LISA, and Rema. A highlight of her performance was a duet of her 2024 song “Wonder” with young artist Tius, as performers waved flags from countries around the world in a circle around them.

This performance was one of three happening simultaneously in the countries hosting the World Cup. In Mexico, before their match against South Africa, fans at Azteca Stadium enjoyed a concert featuring artists like Maná and Los Ángeles Azules.

In Toronto, singer Michael Bublé performed with Alessia Cara and Alanis Morissette. This took place as Canada played to a tie against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

It’s not surprising that Prime Minister Trudeau attended Katy Perry’s concert, considering he and she have been dating since the summer of 2025.

For the “Roar” singer, Trudeau has become her perfect counterpoint.

“Because I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite,” Perry said. “I fly super high and like, you know, touch the veil, cosmos, and sometimes I need to be anchored. So, to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.”
