Melanie Martinez Shares She’s a “Wreck” Over Ex Oliver Tree’s Death

Melanie Martinez is sharing her tribute to Oliver Tree

Following the helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 14th that killed the singer of “Life Goes On” and five others, his ex-girlfriend posted a heartfelt message.

Martinez, who dated Tree from 2019 to 2020, posted on Instagram on June 14th that they’d had a really difficult day. They expressed how hard it was to process the loss of someone they once shared a significant period of their life with.

The singer of “Pity Party” highlighted how committed Oliver Tree (born Oliver Tree Nickel) is to his work, saying she truly admired and respected that dedication.

She continued, saying that people who knew him would always remember the laughter and happiness he brought to others. His laugh was incredibly infectious and heartwarming, and he had a special gift for leading with creativity and enthusiasm while still seeing the world with the curiosity of a child. It was truly inspiring.

As Martinez put it, “He had such a soft heart and was a true artist in every way.”

While commemorating her memories, the 31-year-old expressed hope for peace for her ex.

Oh, I just know he’s up there making even the angels laugh! It’s exactly the kind of thing he’d do. I’ll be down here constantly imagining what amazing, wild thing he’s planning now, even in heaven. I love him so much.

It’s with a heavy heart I share the news of Tree, just 32 years old, who was tragically among six lives lost in a helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro. From what I understand, the crash happened over a car yard specializing in electric vehicles, and sadly, it ignited at least 20 cars on the ground. CNN Brazil confirmed the details, and it’s just a devastating situation.

The artist first started making music in 2013, but he really became popular in 2020 with his album, Ugly is Beautiful. Around that time, people also noticed his unique and unusual style, which he believed helped him succeed.

In a 2023 interview with Billboard, he explained that he intentionally presented a somewhat naive image, seeing it as a reflection of how simplistic things have become. He also believes that experimentation is essential for creativity and developing truly original ideas.
