Bidding for the lightsaber starts at an impressive $1 million, which is understandable considering its history. It’s comparable to a Darth Vader lightsaber used in the films that sold for $3.65 million, and this one could potentially sell for even more.

The Luke Skywalker Lightsaber is a Piece of Hollywood History

According to Heritage Auctions, this lightsaber has a clear and verifiable history, originally coming from Stuart Freeborn – the special effects artist who created Yoda and many iconic makeup looks in Star Wars. It’s been carefully stored for decades and is now the first time it’s being offered for sale. Experts believe this lightsaber is one of the most significant surviving props from The Empire Strikes Back ever available to collectors. Props used on screen from the original Star Wars trilogy are highly sought after, and this one is especially valuable because its use in the film can be confirmed.

According to Heritage Auctions, this lightsaber was built using a repurposed 3-cell Graflex flash unit with a Kobold flash attachment for the handle. The prop department added black plastic grips and a custom-made clamp to replace the original Graflex part. This lightsaber, based on the Graflex design, is instantly recognizable and is considered the most important lightsaber design in the Star Wars franchise, inspiring the creation of many others. It’s about 10 inches long and shows the handmade quality and clever construction typical of the original trilogy films.
