The new movie Avengers: Doomsday will finally bring the powerful Sentinels to life on screen, and they pose a serious threat – potentially even wiping out the Avengers. Originally designed to capture mutants, the Sentinels are major enemies of the X-Men. The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows these comic book-accurate robots, with Cyclops fighting an unseen enemy as Sentinels stand in the background. It seems likely they’ve attacked Xavier’s mansion and the X-Men are losing the fight.
I’m really fascinated by the potential of Doomsday – it’s so much bigger than just a story about mutants! It seems like we’re dealing with at least three different universes colliding: the world of the X-Men (which Monica Rambeau might have touched on in The Marvels), the main Marvel Cinematic Universe we’re familiar with, and the reality where the Fantastic Four exist. That opens up the possibility of villains and heroes jumping between these worlds. It really makes you wonder just how dangerous the Sentinels would be if they ever targeted the Avengers who are still around in the MCU, doesn’t it?
Just How Powerful Are the Sentinels?

If the Sentinels from Doomsday are true to their comic book origins, it raises a key question: which version of the comics do they represent? The Sentinels were built specifically to destroy mutants, so they’re designed to constantly adapt and improve. Each new generation becomes more powerful, meaning you can’t use the same strategy to defeat them twice. For example, the Mark II Sentinels almost captured all known mutants, even developing technology strong enough to contain incredibly powerful ones like Magneto.
X-Men stories frequently show possible futures, and these often demonstrate how dangerous the Sentinels can become. In one famous future, called Days of Future Past, Sentinels take over the world, killing almost all superheroes and capturing mutants. The most powerful Sentinels, the Nimrod models, are so formidable that the X-Men have never truly beaten one. When a Nimrod appeared in the present, the X-Men needed to resort to time travel and magic to stop it. Professor X, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert believed that even a single Nimrod appearing was a threat that could wipe out all mutants.
Could the Sentinels Handle the Avengers as Well as the X-Men?

Sentinels are dangerous hunter robots and have killed more mutants than any other enemy. The first season of X-Men ’97 showed the devastating story where Sentinels wiped out the mutant country of Genosha, a major event in Marvel’s history. While primarily targeting mutants, Sentinels have also fought other heroes on numerous occasions. They are incredibly powerful – ordinary superheroes like Hawkeye barely stand a chance, and they’ve even defended against Thor’s hammer. They can also overcome abilities like Vision’s phasing by using specific frequencies.
Even the adaptable Sentinels have their limits. During the “Onslaught” event, heroes like the X-Men, Avengers, and Spider-Man easily defeated a large number of Sentinels, but these were still under construction. They had been activated early by Onslaught just to distract the heroes. Fully completed Sentinels are designed to be much more challenging opponents, capable of fighting both the X-Men and the Avengers effectively.
In the Days of Future Past future, Sentinels became incredibly advanced, able to defeat both Avengers and X-Men. They were responsible for killing many heroes, including Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Daredevil, and even the Hulk. While it’s never been fully explained how they overcame such a wide range of superpowers, their sophisticated sensors likely allowed them to find and attack heroes, even when they weren’t in costume. It’s believed that Sentinels defeated powerful characters like Thor and the Hulk by simply overwhelming them with sheer numbers – because they could be built rapidly and endlessly.
What Will the MCU’s Sentinels Be Able to Do?
It’s really hard to predict how a battle between the Sentinels and the Avengers would go. Heroes like Black Widow and Hawkeye wouldn’t stand much of a chance, and Vision has weaknesses that the Sentinels could exploit. While Thor and Hulk would be major challenges, it’s important to remember they aren’t as strong in the movies as they are in the comics. Since the Sentinels were powerful enough to defeat those heroes in the comics, they likely could do so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe too.
It’s ironic that both the Sentinels and the Avengers would struggle with the same problem: figuring out how to fight each other. The Avengers have never faced an enemy like the Sentinels – Ultron’s robots weren’t in the same league. The Sentinels, on the other hand, would need to quickly learn how to defend against powers they’d never seen before. Whoever adapts faster will likely win, and the Sentinels are better equipped for that thanks to their incredible computing power. If the Sentinels launch a full-scale attack, it could easily defeat the Avengers.
