Wolverine has been a fan-favorite Marvel hero for many years. Readers have seen him evolve from a rough, independent character with a good heart into a highly respected figure within the Marvel Universe. He’s taken on leadership roles with both the X-Men and the Avengers, and is also incredibly effective as a solo hero. Although he might not be the most powerful hero around, his ability to heal quickly, heightened senses, claws, strength, and unbreakable adamantium skeleton make him a truly formidable opponent for any villain.

Wolverine’s abilities might appear straightforward, but he’s always had surprising depths to them. Over time, Marvel has created countless powers, and some have faded into obscurity – the publisher and editors seem to have forgotten they even exist because they’re no longer used in stories. Here are five powers Marvel seems to have forgotten Wolverine possessed, but dedicated fans still remember.

5) The Rest of His Super Senses

Wolverine is renowned for his skills, and a key part of that is his incredibly heightened senses. While his sense of smell is famous – allowing him to track anyone – it’s often forgotten that all of his senses are superhuman. Though not as powerful as someone like Daredevil, Wolverine’s hearing, taste, touch, and sight are all far beyond a normal human’s capabilities. This has been mentioned in past stories, but recently, writers mostly focus on his sense of smell.

4) Berserker Rages

Wolverine is known for his tough fights, always holding his own. He used to have a quick temper that would send him into a furious, uncontrollable rage, and this was a major part of his stories for a long time. However, these rages have become less frequent. While it’s good that he’s learned to control himself, there have been moments where a return to that classic, wild side would have been fitting. It’s a power fans haven’t seen much of lately.

3) Animal Empathy

Wolverine is famous for his intense anger and tendency to disappear into the wilderness. When he’s in these moods, he often seeks out wolves, running and living alongside them as part of their packs. We recently saw a similar situation in 2024, but something felt off. In the past, Logan could mentally connect with animals, understanding their feelings. This ability isn’t showcased much anymore likely because modern comics don’t often focus on Wolverine’s solitary time in nature or his wild, animalistic rages. It would have been a welcome addition to see this power demonstrated at the start of the recent Wolverine comic series (Volume 8).

2) Hot Claws

The comic series Return of Wolverine faced criticism for many reasons, including a strange new ability: glowing, heated claws. The story began with Wolverine amnesiac and amidst chaos, his claws appearing red and burning hot. This power was never explained, and fans disliked it right away. It only reappeared once in another storyline, Wolverine and the Infinity Watch. While many would expect some acknowledgement or even a joke about this failed experiment, the heated claws have simply been ignored by writers since.

1) Resistence to Telepathy

Wolverine is often around people who can read minds, but for a long time, they couldn’t affect him. His unique abilities made his brain function more like an animal’s, making it nearly impossible for telepaths to access or control his thoughts. This became clear when he briefly lost control and reverted to a feral state, managing to hide on the grounds of the Xavier Institute even from powerful telepaths like Professor X, Jean Grey, and Psylocke. However, this resistance seemed to fade in recent years, and Wolverine has since become susceptible to mental attacks again.
