Chris Barrie, known for his role in Red Dwarf, will be narrating the audiobook version of the new spin-off novel, Red Dwarf: Titan.
The actor famous for playing Rimmer in the popular sci-fi comedy will narrate an audiobook written by Rob Grant and Andrew Marshall, who also co-created Red Dwarf.
Barrie shared that he’s really enjoying reading ‘Red Dwarf: Titan.’ He noted that recording audiobooks can be tough due to the many characters involved, but this particular book is especially fun because it’s filled with hilarious moments and scenarios.
Marshall shared his excitement about Chris Barrie, the incredibly talented actor who plays Arnold J Rimmer, narrating the audiobook for Red Dwarf Titan. He’s sure Rob (Grant) would be equally thrilled, and jokingly added they’d likely have argued over who was more pleased – with Marshall claiming victory for now.
Barrie played Rimmer throughout all 13 seasons of Red Dwarf, and he also narrated the show’s first two novels: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers (1992) and Better Than Life (1995).
Titan is a new show that will explore the backstory of Red Dwarf, the popular BBC sci-fi comedy. Red Dwarf originally followed Dave Lister (played by Craig Charles) who wakes up after being in stasis for three million years to discover he’s the only human left. His companions are a hologram of his annoying roommate, Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), and a creature that evolved from his cat (Danny John-Jules).

In an interview with TopMob shortly before his death, co-writer Grant described the novel as featuring Lister and Rimmer on shore leave on Titan, before the events of the accident.
This story takes place in a separate universe, allowing us to use beloved characters in new and unexpected ways. The challenge was creating something original while still respecting the established history and rules of the original story.

He explained that the new story will involve Lister and Rimmer receiving a warning from the distant future. This message tells them that every reality is in danger of disappearing unless they take action.
Grant promised plenty of classic Red Dwarf humor, saying viewers are in for a really funny ride and will be laughing a lot.
The new Red Dwarf novel, Titan, will be released in hardback, ebook, and audio formats on July 16, 2026, and you can pre-order it now. You can also watch Red Dwarf episodes on BBC iPlayer.
