British comedy legend cast in Harry Potter TV series as beloved character previously cut from films

The team making the new Harry Potter TV show is currently casting actors to play the famous characters that were previously played in the movies.

The show has added a character, Peeves the Poltergeist, who was left out of the movies but is popular with fans of the original Harry Potter books. Viewers will likely be excited to see him included in this new adaptation.

Peter Serafinowicz, a well-known British comedian with credits in shows like Spaced, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, and Miracle Workers, is set to play Peeves, the mischievous poltergeist from Hogwarts, according to Variety.

Simon Pegg collaborator Nick Serfainowicz has appeared in several popular movies, such as Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spy, Sing, and How to Train Your Dragon.

You know, it’s a bit of a sad movie history footnote, but the role of Peeves was originally intended for the brilliant Rik Mayall in the earlier films. Sadly, despite his casting, the scenes featuring his character ended up being cut, reportedly just to keep the movie at a reasonable length. It’s a shame, because I think he would have absolutely killed in that role!

Mayall recounted a frustrating experience where he completed some filming, received payment, only to be told a month later that his scenes had been cut from the final movie.

So, they offered me tickets to the premiere, which was amazing! But honestly, I was already tied up with my own filming schedule, so I passed them on to my kids. They were thrilled, of course!

He hadn’t told his children about his role in the film yet. When they saw him, they commented on how realistic his makeup was and said he didn’t look like himself at all – they actually believed he was playing the character of Hagrid.

Fans have always hoped the new version would be more faithful to the books, including details and scenes that didn’t make it into the movies. It now appears that the mischievous poltergeist, Peeves, will be one of those included elements.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism from some people because of her opinions on transgender rights.

In 2020, she released a detailed statement explaining her views on discussions about sex and gender. However, LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall criticized and disagreed with the essay.

J.K. Rowling has publicly expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In this post, she stated that she doesn’t believe children can be transgender and rejected the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and other stars of the Harry Potter films have spoken out to support the transgender community and have made it clear they disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views.

Several actors, such as Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent, have come to the author’s defense amid recent criticism.

All eight Harry Potter films will be available to stream on HBO and HBO Max starting December 25, 2026. In the UK, you can subscribe to HBO Max for as little as £5.99 per month.
