The popular Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from Shueisha is still going strong, even after losing notable series like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen last year. However, new manga have stepped up to fill the gap, with Ichi the Witch being the most successful among them. Last year, it ranked second in manga debuts on the Manga Plus platform. If not for the divisive launch of Drama Queen, which garnered more initial views due to its contentious debut, Ichi the Witch could have taken the top spot. Regardless, Ichi the Witch continues to perform well, and its latest accomplishment is a major milestone.
On August 4th, 2025, Japan will see the release of Volume 4 from Ichi the Witch’s official account (formerly Twitter). The cover preview hints at a significant milestone – the series has already sold 700,000 copies! This achievement underscores the series’ promising future within the magazine. Meanwhile, another successful manga in the same publication, Sakamoto Days, is gearing up for its “Final Battle” starting with issue 36. With One Piece also leading the way, Ichi the Witch stands as one of the flagship titles poised to guide the magazine into a prosperous future.

Despite some doubters, Ichi the Witch’s latest success in Shonen Jump was almost predictable due to its unique yet formulaic approach within the genre. The manga excels by blending individuality with adherence to the typical Shonen Jump style. Many popular Shonen Jump stories revolve around protagonists who are deeply committed to their craft, fueled by a relentless ambition and singular objective. Characters such as Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Deku, Asta, and Tanjiro from the magazine exemplify this pattern. However, exceptions do exist, like Jujutsu Kaisen, which offers a unique take on its protagonist. Traditionally, iconic Shonen series have been characterized by a clear and captivating objective for their heroes.
In “Ichi the Witch,” our lead character aligns perfectly with this description, and the narrative unfolds by providing depth not only for the protagonist but also for his associated characters. It was just a matter of time before this manga became a standout in the magazine. This ascent seems particularly apt now, given that many iconic series from the same publication have ended their runs. With “Ichi the Witch” being an obvious homage to the magazine’s legendary figures, it was only natural for her to step into the limelight as one of Shonen Jump’s fresh and defining characters.
