House of the Dragon is starting strong! The show’s third season is receiving excellent reviews, matching its previous record on Rotten Tomatoes. After a two-year hiatus, the Game of Thrones prequel returns to HBO this month. The second season was somewhat controversial due to changes from George R.R. Martin’s source material, ‘Fire & Blood’ (which Martin himself noted), as well as issues with the show’s speed and a frustrating cliffhanger. Season 3 begins right where the last one left off – on the brink of a major battle.
While a previous choice may have impacted season two, it seems to be really helping the latest episodes. Currently, House of the Dragon Season 3 has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – down just a bit from its initial perfect score of 100%. As a huge fan, I can already feel the excitement building for the show’s comeback on HBO Max! It’s actually number one on the streamer here in the US right now – FlixPatrol told me so. It popped back into the top 10 earlier this week, but really took off after everyone started sharing their reviews. Seriously, the hype is real!
Why Are House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Reviews So Positive?
Reviews for the latest season of the fantasy series highlight a few key strengths. In my review for ComicBook’s House of the Dragon Season 3, I especially praised the cast – particularly Emma D’Arcy’s performance – as well as the impressive Battle of the Gullet and how effectively the show combines compelling characters with stunning visuals.
Other reviewers have also highlighted these strengths. Next Best Picture declared it the best episode of the series yet, and Looper praised the cast as being on par with, or even better than, those in Game of Thrones. Variety found the Battle of the Gullet to be spectacular, and RogerEbert.com singled out the third episode as a standout – something I definitely share their opinion on.
Critics had a mixed reaction to the show. The Times (UK) found it felt dated and uninspired, describing it as “so old hat” and “boring.” Similarly, The Hollywood Reporter noted the series was overly crowded and fast-paced, adding that despite strong fan enthusiasm, the frequent use of dragons and special effects had lost some impact.
Even though the show has a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Season 3 might still get mixed reactions. Viewers who didn’t like how different Season 2 was from the original story may feel the same way about this season, which takes even more creative freedoms – including some significant changes to the source material. The action slows down after a strong start, allowing for deeper storytelling and character development. If you’re hoping for non-stop battles, you might need to adjust your expectations, although there will be large-scale action sequences later on.
I truly believe this is going to be another huge hit! The show still draws a massive audience, and it just feels like something everyone will enjoy. Honestly, some of the action sequences are absolutely incredible. While it might not quite reach the heights of peak Game of Thrones – despite what critics say – the characters and story are exceptionally well done, making this one of the best things on television right now.
