One of Anime’s Biggest Isekai is Planning Surprise Comeback With New Story

The “Isekai” genre – stories about people being transported to another world – is hugely popular in anime, and shows like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Overlord, and The Rising of the Shield Hero have really led the way. While many isekai anime are successful, Sword Art Online consistently stands out, and fans will be excited to hear it’s returning next month with a new installment that’s a bit unexpected.

Get ready to return to the world of Sword Art Online with Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a new role-playing game launching in North America on July 10th. While you won’t play as Kirito or Asuna, you’ll encounter original characters from the very beginning of the story. The game takes place in Aincrad, the virtual world where ten thousand players faced a terrifying reality: death in the game meant death in real life. Check out the trailer below to see what’s in store as Sword Art Online aims to dominate the gaming scene once again.

What Are The Echoes?

Sword Art Online introduces a revolutionary full-dive MMORPG – a game you enter with your mind. It quickly became incredibly popular, but turned into a terrifying fight for survival when deaths inside the game began causing real-world fatalities. You are one of the many players trapped, and you encounter Iori, a beta tester you’ve played with before. The story unfolds in the floating castle of Aincrad, revealing how players struggle to survive and cope with constant danger in this virtual world where death is always near.

With a new video game on the way next month, fans are still waiting for more news about a new Sword Art Online anime movie. It’s been confirmed that a movie is in development, but details like the title, release date, and plot are currently unknown. The last movie, Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night, revisited the original story with Kirito and Asuna, and there’s still plenty of source material available for future installments. Even decades after the story began as a light novel in 2002, Kirito’s journey continues to be a significant part of the isekai genre.
