Knicks Owner Asked Players Not to Have Sex Before NBA Championship Win

Some slam-dunk milestones require major sacrifices from the WAGs.

New York Knicks owner James Dolan famously asked his players to avoid sexual activity before games, believing it would help them win the NBA championship. His strategy seemed to work – the Knicks won the title on June 13th with a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5.

In a March pep talk shared on the Roommates Podcast on June 15, coach Dolan suggested the players abstain from sex for the next ten weeks. He explained that Spartans historically denied themselves pleasures to gain a competitive advantage, and encouraged the team to do the same to ‘get the edge’.

He continued with a playful suggestion: “Go home and talk to your wives. Don’t mention I suggested it, but explain what this will involve – the commitment you’re making and the sacrifices they might have to make as well.”

As someone who’s seen a lot of teams succeed and stumble, I always tell players that keeping things professional is key. This was something I stressed when I took on the leadership role with the Knicks back in ’99 as Chairman of Madison Square Garden – any personal issues need to stay outside the locker room and away from practice. It’s about protecting the team’s focus and creating a positive environment.

He emphasized that the next ten weeks should be entirely focused on their own performance. He stated that their success wouldn’t depend on their opponents, but rather on how well they play, as he’s confident this team is capable of defeating any other in the NBA – a fact they’ve already proven.

If the team’s winning streak concluded with a victory—which it did at the Frost Bank Center in Texas, where Brunson was also named the 2026 NBA Finals MVP—Dolan pledged a gift to every fan as a thank you for their support.

The billionaire stressed that he wanted everyone to share this message with their partners: when the team wins the championship, they’ll all receive rings. He plans to buy rings for each of the players’ significant others, recognizing how important their support will be to the team’s success.

As for players who don’t have a WAG cheering them on?

Dolan also suggested that if you’re not already in a relationship, find someone to partner with for the next ten weeks and invite them to join you.
