Capcom strongly suggests a Devil May Cry 6 is likely in development. Although Devil May Cry 5 launched in 2019 and received a Special Edition on newer consoles in 2020, Capcom hasn’t announced any further installments in the popular action series – until now. Recent information released by the company indicates that it would be surprising if they didn’t eventually create a sixth game.
So, Capcom just dropped their latest sales numbers, and I was really surprised by what they said about Devil May Cry 5! Apparently, it sold a massive 2.7 million copies this past year – that’s the best single year the game has ever had, which is crazy considering it came out almost seven years ago. And get this: overall, DMC5 has now sold close to 13 million copies! That makes it one of Capcom’s biggest hits ever, and I’m super stoked for them (and still playing the game!).
Honestly, I’m still stoked to see Devil May Cry 5 selling so well! I think there are two big reasons why. First off, the new Devil May Cry anime on Netflix definitely brought a ton of attention back to the series – it got me and a lot of others interested in checking out the latest game. Plus, Capcom is always putting DMC5 on sale on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, which makes it super affordable. It’s hard to pass up when it’s at a good price!
No matter the reason, Devil May Cry 5 continues to perform well, almost guaranteeing Capcom will make another game in the series. A direct sequel, Devil May Cry 6, makes the most sense because it would allow them to continue the story that fans enjoyed in the fifth installment. While a reboot or spin-off are possibilities, Capcom’s previous attempts at those haven’t been well-received. If they want to match the success of DMC5, sticking with DMC6 is likely the best option.
Next week, Devil May Cry 5 will be available on a new platform with the release of Devil May Cry 5: Devil Hunter Edition. This marks the first time the game will be playable on a Nintendo system—specifically, the Nintendo Switch 2. You can get your copy starting June 23rd.
