The popular anime series Mobile Suit Gundam made a comeback in theaters earlier this year, continuing the story of Hathaway’s Flash and revisiting the world established after the original conflict between Amuro and Char. With plans for even more anime projects, including a remake of the classic 1970s series, Gundam has a lot to look forward to. However, Bandai Namco Filmworks, the studio behind the anime, is currently facing financial difficulties with both Gundam and other properties.
Bandai Namco Filmworks recently shared its yearly financial results, and the news wasn’t great. Profits for the company, particularly for the Gundam franchise, dropped by 43.8% over the past year – from about $29 million to $20.5 million. While this doesn’t reflect Bandai Namco’s overall financial performance (which is much stronger), the report doesn’t explain why profits decreased. You can read the full financial report here.
What Happened to Bandai Namco Filmworks?
Although we don’t know exactly why net profits have decreased, we can look at what Bandai Namco Filmworks released over the past two years. Last year, they produced popular TV series like Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, One Punch Man Season 3, and a remake of Ronin Warriors. They also released several films, including That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, and three Star Blazers films. Many fans might consider the anime releases for the 2024-2025 fiscal year to be even more significant.
Bandai Namco Filmworks had a strong year, releasing popular new seasons of TV shows like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (season three) and Blue Lock (season two), along with the new series Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance and a sequel to Code Geass, titled Roze of the Recapture. They also released several films, including Blue Lock The Movie, a revival of Star Blazers, and various Gundam movies. Although profits decreased, the $8-9 million USD drop isn’t considered a major concern overall. Looking ahead, Bandai Namco Filmworks plans to continue focusing on its most popular anime series, so it will be interesting to see their performance in next year’s report in 2027.
