Housemarque, a gaming studio owned by Sony, says it now truly feels like part of the PlayStation family after releasing its first game since being acquired in 2021.
Many PlayStation fans are familiar with Housemarque, the Finnish game studio. Though they’ve collaborated with PlayStation Studios for years – even going back to the PS3 era as a close partner – they weren’t officially part of the PlayStation family until after their popular game Returnal was released.
Founded in 1993, the studio has expanded significantly as part of the PlayStation family and currently employs 120 people, according to The Game Business.
While still relatively small for a major game development team today—and they needed help from Nixxes to finish Saros—the studio has tripled in size over the last ten years, growing from the team that created Nex Machina for the PlayStation 4.
So, will their next game be as large and complex as Saros? Not likely. According to co-founder Ilari Kuittinen, the studio is considering a smaller-scale project next time.
He said:
We’re currently figuring out the next steps for Saros and getting feedback from the community. Beyond that, we’re thinking about future projects – some potentially smaller in scope than Saros. We have a lot of ideas we want to investigate and will determine what’s feasible.
I’m intrigued by what Kuittinen could be referring to here.
It seems like things are still uncertain right now, but I’m hoping they might create a classic arcade-style game similar to Super Stardust HD or Resogun.
With so many incredible independent games coming out now, I honestly wondered where something like this would fit with PlayStation’s usual lineup. But maybe they just wanted to try something different and let their creative side shine while they work on bigger things down the line – a nice little experiment before tackling what’s next.
I’m not against the idea, assuming that is what Kuittinen is alluding to.
It’s no surprise that recent layoffs in the gaming industry have worried fans about the stability of their favorite game developers, particularly since the game Saros isn’t currently selling very well.
But Housemarque seems relaxed about it all at least.
We’re committed to maintaining our strengths and continuing to show people that our games are the best around. That’s what we’re aiming for.
Damn right.
