As a huge fan of those Hellboy films, it’s still disappointing to hear Doug Jones talk about why we won’t be getting a third one directed by Guillermo del Toro. I loved his portrayal of Abe Sapien in the first two movies – Hellboy back in 2004 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008 – and I really thought we’d get to see the story finish. Sadly, that planned trilogy just never came to be, and it seems unlikely now.
I’m so excited about a new documentary being made about Doug Jones! It’s called Get Me Doug Jones, and it covers his incredible career. Seriously, this guy has done everything – from the iconic Mac Tonight commercials to memorable roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Star Trek: Discovery. I think he’s one of the most talented actors out there, especially considering how many amazing performances he’s given while hidden under layers of prosthetics!
Doug Jones and producer Derek Maki appeared on Virtual Trek Con’s The Main Viewer to talk about their documentary, Get Me Doug Jones, and the Kickstarter campaign to fund its completion. ScreenRant’s John Orquiola highlighted Jones’ memorable roles, including Hellboy, and Jones explained why a third Hellboy movie seems unlikely. You can find Jones’ comments below.
I starred in the first two Hellboy movies, which were made just four years apart. Even now, fans still ask if we’ll make a third one! But the last movie came out in 2008, it’s been a long time, and there have been other versions since then. It’s probably too late now, and Ron Perlman and I would likely be the oldest superhero duo ever if we did!

It’s been 18 years since Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released in 2008, as Doug Jones recently noted. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films were known for being large-scale and physically challenging to make, particularly for Ron Perlman, who is now 76 years old. The demanding role – including wearing heavy prosthetic makeup as Hellboy – took a significant toll on Perlman at the time, and it’s been nearly two decades since then.
Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films developed a dedicated fanbase, but neither one was a huge commercial success in theaters. Twenty years ago, strong DVD sales allowed for the creation of Hellboy II, but that extra source of revenue isn’t reliable anymore with the rise of streaming. A third Hellboy movie would have been even more ambitious and visually impressive, completing del Toro’s planned trilogy.
It’s been disappointing watching the Hellboy franchise after Guillermo del Toro stepped away. They tried a reboot in 2019 with David Harbour as Hellboy, but it really didn’t land well – critics hated it, fans were disappointed, and it flopped at the box office so badly even the director disowned it! Then came Hellboy: The Crooked Man in 2024, which hardly anyone saw. It just doesn’t compare to how great things used to be with Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and Doug Jones leading the team.
It’s great to see Doug Jones thriving after wrapping up his fantastic run as Saru on Star Trek: Discovery earlier this year. For five seasons, he was almost entirely hidden under incredible prosthetics, but now he’s clearly enjoying roles where he can, well, be himself. He recently reprised his wonderfully quirky role as Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+, and it’s a reminder of just how charismatic he is when we actually get to see him. It’s a refreshing change of pace for a truly talented actor.
The documentary Get Me Doug Jones includes interviews with actors who’ve worked alongside Doug Jones, such as Sonequa Martin-Green, Ron Perlman, Noah Wyle, and Bette Midler, plus insights from people who know him personally. The film’s Kickstarter campaign offers unique rewards, including items from Doug Jones’ own collection of props and costumes from his movies and TV shows.
Doug Jones continues to encounter fans who love his portrayal of Abe Sapien in Hellboy. However, unfortunately, the planned third film from director Guillermo del Toro will likely never happen.
