Olivia Wilde Shares Rare Insight Into “Loveliest” Harry Styles Romance

Olivia Wilde is looking back on her time with ex Harry Styles as it was.

More than three years after their split, the director of Don’t Worry Darling revealed details about her relationship with the former One Direction member, saying people were very angry when they first began dating.

Olivia discussed the public reaction to her relationship with Harry during a recent podcast episode. She said the age difference – Harry was 26 and she was ten years older when they began dating – really bothered some people. “It was crazy,” she explained, adding that she’s still processing it all and acknowledging there was significant public outrage.

Olivia, who has two children – Otis and Daisy – with her former partner Jason Sudeikis, also suggested that the public’s reaction might be because people feel a one-sided connection to her and the singer.

She described their relationship as wonderful and surprisingly cozy. She said it was incredibly sweet, beautiful, and felt very much like a loving home life.

She explained that they had created a protective environment for themselves, and somehow managed to shield it from outside criticism – which she felt was remarkable and a credit to their efforts.

Olivia Wilde has rarely spoken about her relationship with Harry Styles, but recently opened up after they began dating several months after he joined the cast of her film, Don’t Worry Darling, in late 2020. Just before filming finished in early 2021, Olivia – who had officially ended her relationship with Jason Sudeikis earlier that year – told Vogue magazine about the decision to cast Styles in the now-famous movie.

Olivia Wilde recalled being thrilled when Harry Styles joined the film, explaining that costume designer Arianne Phillips and she celebrated because they knew he genuinely cared about fashion. She appreciated his enthusiasm for style, noting that not all actors share that interest.

When Harry posed in a dress for a photoshoot with Vogue magazine, Olivia was quick to publicly support him.

She told Vogue she finds him very forward-thinking, and hopes his self-assuredness—which isn’t tied to harmful ideas about masculinity—represents a positive shift in his generation and for the future. She believes he’s leading the way in redefining what it means to be a confident man, and that’s really impactful and inspiring.

Harry and Olivia generally kept their relationship private before they broke up in 2022, but Olivia admitted she often wanted to clarify inaccurate stories about them being together.

In a 2021 interview with Vogue, she explained that true happiness comes from focusing on what genuinely matters – your loved ones and the things you cherish – and not worrying about the opinions of others.
